Freight Train Aid Rescues Motorists Near Sublette

A central freight train assisted in a seven hour rescue after 15 cars and 10 trucks were stranded in eight foot snow drifts on U S 52 near Sublette three miles south. Trainmaster Virgil Shelley and clerk Tom Redington, in a stalled car, walked to Sublette. Farmers rescued others and brought them to town. State Employes Here Hold First Meeting of 1958

Mt Vernon Chapter 98 of the Illinois State Employees Association held its first meeting of 1958 Tuesday evening at the Mt Vernon TB Hospital Assembly Hall. President Joseph P Bradigan presided with 38 members present as he summarized the Springfield Directors Meeting and the proposed legislation benefiting state workers. A discussion on a proposed constitution and by laws followed. A membership drive will begin immediately to recruit all state workers, and next meeting details will be announced soon. R O McClellan will attend as Executive Secretary at the next gathering in late February. The session closed with a short social period.

Niagara Falls Area Jarred By Chemical Blast

A railroad tank car loaded with a chemical exploded near the Porter avenue area, shaking Niagara Falls for miles. Hospitals saw many emergency cases but no serious injuries. Hyde Park Elementary children suffered flying glass as windows broke across nearby schools. Service disruptions followed. the chemical’s identity was not disclosed.
