Funeral for Anna Slamans 68 at Mt. Vernon church

Anna Slamans 68 of Ewing died at 10 45 am Friday at her daughter Fern Taylors Mt Vernon home from a heart attack. She was born May 10 1886 near Ewing daughter of William and Semelia Gifford. Survived by husband W H Slamans four sons Sam Paul John Nelson two daughters 13 grandchildren and two sisters. Funeral Sunday 2 pm at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church led by Rev Carl Williams and Rev Dwight Dane. Burial in New Hope cemetery. Body lies in state at Ina Funeral Home.

Mt. Vernon resident Otto Eugene Smith died at 7 45 this morning aged 89 years 25 days He served as caretaker of the First Methodist church for 20 years Funeral services set for Monday at 2 pm Myers Chapel Rev Bayne Wilson officiating interment Oakwood cemetery Body at Myers Chapel after 4 pm Sunday He was born December 27 1865 to George W Smith and Mahala Moss He belonged to the Moose Lodge Surviving sister Jessie Hazel Smith of Mt Vernon

Friendly Neighbors Club hears March of Dimes pledge

The Laird friendly neighbors club met January 20 at Mrs. Walter Klinker’s home with thirteen members present. They voted to donate 5.10 to the March of Dimes. The next meeting is set for February 17 at Mrs. Ray Barbee’s home. Various local visits and social notes follow, including several residents traveling for business and family illnesses.

Former Resident Accepts Position In Kissimmee Fla

H Owen Donham, a Mt. Vernon former resident, has been named general manager of Osceola Cement Products in Kissimmee Florida. For seven years he led the Mt. Vernon Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. branch warehouse on South Tenth Street. He and Agnes lived on Salem Road. A trained attorney, he chose business, attended a Terre Haute commercial college and the University of Illinois. He is a 32nd degree Mason and member of Ainad Shrine Temple in East St. Louis.

Car And Truck Collision Near Mt Vernon

A car driven by L. V. Pate and a welding rig truck driven by Wayne Walker collided at 6 15 p m Friday on state highway 37 six miles south of Mt Vernon. No injuries were reported. The truck was turning onto Davis Road when the crash occurred. the car sustained heavy damage while the truck had minor damage.
