Train Kills 2 In Car At Aviston Crossing
Two youths named Mark Jones 18 and Ivonne 8 died when their car stopped at a crossing in Aviston Illinois and was struck by a second train. Parents William Jones 39 and Betty Jones 36 of Trenton were injured along with three other passengers. A state trooper witnessed the collision after the car began crossing as a train passed and another train struck.

Two Vehicle Crashes Reported by Mt Vernion Police
Two automobile accidents were reported to Mt Vernion police yesterday. A car pushed to start struck two parked cars on South 19th Street at 3:48 p.m., damaging Rodney A. Pearce’s vehicle and injuring Lula Miller. Pearce, 18, of 1310 Westcott, was charged with careless driving. The parked cars belonged to Vernor Mays and Newell B. Wimberly, both on South 19th Street. A second minor injury occurred at 9th and Main yesterday with Lula Miller hurt.

Grass Fires near Mt Vernon Put Out by Firemen
Four grass fires were extinguished by Mt Vernon firefighters yesterday and today. A grass blaze at 317 Pine, Bernice Muzzarelli home, was extinguished at 11 19 am starting from a trash barrel. No damage reported. Two leaf and brush fires at Oakwood Cemetery occurred yesterday with no damage. A grass fire at 32nd and Broadway around 9 00 am today caused heavy smoke across Broadway and traffic was directed by police. There was no damage.

Man Arrested After Shotgun Incident On Tenth Street
A 41 year old man was taken into custody after a 1:10 a.m. shooting at Pickett Apartments 1106 South 10th. Police say he fired a shotgun toward the Gary and Lois Stratton apartment and threatened another woman and her daughter. He was found in the hallway with a loaded shotgun and a hunting knife strapped to his leg. Aggravated assault charges are pending.

Fire kills 77 in Mendota home blaze
Fred Reeder, 77, died in a morning fire that gutted his two story frame house in Mendota Illinois. The blaze severely damaged the residence as firefighters battled the flames. Reeder was found in a bedroom after the fire broke out, authorities said.
