In preparation for the Spring Easter Seal Appeal beginning March 1, area sponsors Genevieve Brinkmann Joyce Kirkpatrick and Leon Bankston are named as county chairmen for 21 southern Illinois counties. Panamanian cargo ship Ukola sank in 12 foot seas about 200 miles northwest of Key West. Seven sailors were killed and 13 were missing. Captain Alejandro Felix and two crewmen survived. Ukola carried bulk sugar from the Dominican Republic to Galveston. Felix was rescued by the Coast Guard and treated before release. Crewmen were saved by other ships.
