Dr. Don B. Stewart of Anna remains critically ill at Mayo Hospital Rochester Minnesota. Several relatives and friends travel and visit, with note of illnesses operations and funerals affecting the Mt Vernon community.
Several candidates filed petitions for precinct committee positions in the county clerk’s office yesterday. Names include Casner, Earl Riddle, R McClellan, Ed Black, Hubert Danner, Ray McKinney, John Minster, Emmit Wilson, J W Jamerson, Everett Dalby, Wayne Newton, Goebel Wood, Robert D Allen, Robert Quinn, Otis Braddy, Rolla Williams and others across Pendleton Mt Vernon and Spring Garden precincts in diverse party designations.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lovenia Etta Johnson aged 89 were held at 2:00 p m at the Free Will Baptist church in Inn with the Rev. W R Burton of Whittington officiating. Burial was in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Benton. She died Monday evening in Garden City Michigan after a lingering illness. Born in Hardin County Kentucky in 1860 she married James J Johnson in 1879 who preceded her in death in 1939. Survivors include sons Raymond James Donald Oscar and Thomas Johnson of Pontiac Michigan Harry Johnson of Wayne Michigan and Mrs Bernice Head of Inn plus 20 grandchildren 40 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Miss Erma Lou Somers of Mt Vernon wed Forrest Elliott of the same city in a December 6 double ring ceremony at the bride’s parents home in Macedonia TH Rev Wayne Thomas of Louisville KY performed the service Attendants were Miss Betty Somers and Walter Somers A luncheon for 24 followed The couple both work for the International Shoe Company of Mt Vernon and will reside at 1607 South 12th Street
A conference to organize Mt Vernon city and township for a mobile X Ray program will convene at 5 00 p m tomorrow at the De Witt Maxey Motor Co announced by Silas Echols executive secretary of the Jefferson County Tuberculosis Association. All interested in the program are invited to attend.
Effingham Illinois outlines a $1.5 million hospital project to replace St Anthony’s destroyed by fire that killed 75. Donors contributed about $600,000 with remaining funds from federal and state aid. The plan also includes a $110,000 community park pool and a $100,000 outdoor drive in movie.
Mr and Mrs Bob R Piercy welcome a six pound eight ounce daughter born at Jefferson Memorial Hospital at 12 53 am. JoAnn Walls is the mother. Ben Harold Keeney and wife Geff report a son named Jack Bennie at Good Samaritan Hospital yesterday afternoon. Charles Sr Sandy and Ver non share a daughter born at 6 31 pm at Good Samaritan. Norman Lee Sharpe and wife Route 6 Vernon announce a son Addison born yesterday evening at Good Samaritan. Len Hogan and wife Ashley welcome a son born at Good Samaritan this morning. Billy Jack Foust and wife Jackie Wane of 207 North Sixth Street Cool report a son born at Good Samaritan this morning.
Hospital notes list admissions for Good Samaritan and Jefferson Memorial including Mrs. Lucille Zapp and Bertha May Williams among several others. Discharges include Amy Gantz Marvin Rust and the note ends with Guy Johnson.
A special meeting is scheduled for Wednesday January 18 at 7 30 p m. The Past and Most Excellent Master degrees will be conferred. High Priest Guente Cole and Cecil N Loy Secretary are listed.
The Ning City Retailers host a general meeting at Robb's Coffee House at 6 30 this evening featuring Joe Meek executive secretary Illinois Retail Federation. A short business session includes by laws adoption and Christmas awards.

Twelve little friends joined James Stephen Gregory for a second birthday party at the Gregory home 809 Salem road. His mother Mrs Jimmie Gregory served refreshments and the toddlers received favors.
The Mt. Vernon P T A Council held a regular meeting at Casey Junior High School led by president Mrs William C Boyd. Plans were set for a city wide P T A meeting February 21 with Rev Andrew Caraker speaking on Educations Expanding Horizon. A nominating committee for next year was elected and health committee members appointed. Two delegates were chosen for the Illinois P T A State convention in Chicago in April. Lions Club luncheon featured Joe Meek on economic conditions and Sears Roebuck pension plan. Guests included Paul Broyles Rex Hubbard John Holden and J P White.
Barber Shop singers from many cities join Mt. Vernon chapter for the first annual Parade of Quartets on February 19 at Mt. Vernon high school auditorium. Master of ceremonies will be Jerry D. Beeler of Evansville. Quartets include One More Four and Mixed-Up Four of St. Louis, Dixieliners and McPhee Family of Evansville, Elks Quartet of Vincennes, Barber-Q-Four of LaGrange, The Four Sharps of Alton, and The Egyptian Keys of Mt. Vernon. S. P. E. B. S. S. A. has 500 chapters and 40,000 members in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Carl Little is president and James Hampton secretary.
Funeral services for Grant Dalby of Bonnie will be held Friday at 1 30 p m at Myers Chapel with the Rev O E Connett officiating The body will remain at Myers Chapel where friends may call Dalby a retired school teacher and former Bonnie post master died yesterday.
Mrs. Carl Russell of 17420 Harlan Road Fast Detroit announces the marriage of her daughter Peggy Highsmith to Karl Clayton of Detroit. The private ceremony was held Saturday December 24 at 4 30 pm in the bridegroom s mother s home. Peggy wore eggshell satin. The couple will reside at 19352 Cameron Detroit Michigan. Peggy is granddaughter of Mrs Grace Riges of Mt Vernon. Mrs Clayton works in the Detroit Leaders Association office and Mr Clayton is employed at Chrysler Motor Car Co.
A free service clinic for veterans and dependents will be held at Mt Vernon city hall Saturday January 21 from 9 am to 5 pm. National and chapter officers will assist with service-connected disabilities VA benefits medical treatment insurance widow rights and employment. The program aims to bring expert veterans aid to the community.
Mt Vernon Jefferson County Mutual Fire Insurance Co. elected officers and five directors at its annual meeting held at the company office on Main Street. New officers include B F Case as president Luther Hester as vice president and Madge Stull as secretary treasurer. Reports show fire losses were lower than previous years and membership continues to rise.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Dulaney of Wayne City were treated at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital last night after an automobile accident. They were released this morning.

Summersville 4-H clubs Funmakers and Eagles gathered January 14 at Summersville School basement for a crazy hat party. Lawrence Heskett won for craziest hat while Judy Rogers of Mt. Vernon was elected Vice-president to replace Claudine Jamerson who is moving away. Roll call listed cities and states, secretary read report, and pledges and songs were performed. Twenty seven members and five guests attended with plans for a Valentine party February 14 hosted by several members. volunteers urged to bring valentines.
