Rend Lake cost jump shocks RendLake sponsors

Benton Illinois A Rend Lake Conservancy District spokesman said cost estimates rose sharply for the 24 800 acre reservoir on the Big Muddy River, from 21 million to 43 million. The district faces higher local share and will lean on state funds for added expense. The federal government is expected to cover much of the cost while a multicity water system adds 7 million to 10 million.

Soviet ships and planes snoop on U S fleet near Hornet

Soviet jet bombers and warships patrolled close to the U S carrier Hornet and six destroyers during antisubmarine drills in the Sea of Japan. Navy planes and ships kept the Soviets at a safe distance with no hostile acts reported. A Soviet destroyer shadowed the group for two days, while a missile submarine and a surveillance trawler came within view in international waters near Hokkaido. The incident underscores heightened Cold War watchfulness within range of Siberian airfields.

Eight killed in headon crash near Neosho Missouri

Eight women and children rode in a foreign car from Goodman toward Neosho when a southbound pickup collided head on on U S 71. Six in the car died, including Viola Mae Jordan and three daughters. Injured were two Jordan daughters and Magmie Lucille Mason, the pickup driver. The crash occurred about 4 p m Thursday in cloudy weather with good visibility and a clear two lane road.

Five Yanks Die In Viet Helicopters

Five U S servicemen were killed and three wounded in combat helicopter operations in the Mekong Delta today. The heaviest toll came when a turbine UH1A exploded in the air southwest of Saigon, four killed, while another American door gunner on an H21 was struck by a bullet. The deaths raise U S combat fatalities in South Vietnam to 99 since 1961, with total U S service deaths from all causes at 173.
