Illinois Board of Higher Education names Browne executive director

The Illinois Board of Higher Education formed last summer named Dr. Richard G. Browne of Normal as executive director. Browne, 60, a retired Illinois State Normal University professor, served as vice chairman of the Illinois Commission on Higher Education from 1934 to 1957 and as executive officer of the Illinois Teachers College Board from 1951 to 1961. The board chose Springfield for offices and will hold monthly meetings at various state locations.

Sixteen Charged in Chicago School Sit-In Protests

Sixteen demonstrators including 15 Black women 5 Black men and a white minister were charged with loitering after a two week sit-in at Burnside Elementary School on Chicago’s South Side. Youth Injured in Collision Leads to Arrest

Eddie Dull aged 16 of 1909 Olive suffered a minor leg injury when a collision in the 500 block of Conger Avenue pinned him between two parked cars. Loyd E. Tate, 33, of 1212 Welkins, was charged with driving while intoxicated after his car struck a McKenzie vehicle, damaging both cars over $100. Tate pled innocent and posted bond for a January 24 trial.

Donald E. Cole of 601 Harrison reported to police yesterday that his 12 gauge shotgun was stolen. He said the theft occurred in December.

Two cases were heard in county court here Tuesday. Daniel L. Hayes aged 29 was fined five dollars and costs on a charge for issuing a check to defraud. John J. Garry aged 38 was fined five dollars and costs on a charge of issuing a check to defraud. Restitution had already been made in each case.
