Byrnes Returns to Politics to Seek South Carolina Governor

James F Byrnes former secretary of state and wartime assistant president at age 70 reenters politics to run for governor of South Carolina. He announced the bid Saturday night after stints as supreme court justice war mobilization director and U S senator and representative. The Democratic primary is set for July 11 with three others already entering the race. Byrnes said he will not pursue the presidency under any circumstances.

Letter Carriers Meet at Mt Vernon Post Office

The Jefferson County Rural Letter Carriers and Auxiliary met in the Mt. Vernon Post Office on Saturday evening at 7 30. Vice president J Blaine Marlow opened the regular monthly business meeting and Evan Smith gave the invocation before a potluck supper. Auxiliary chair Mrs Ray Bain led the group in prayer and the Lord s Prayer while a social hour followed. Visitors included Postmaster and Mrs Raymond Grigg and several couples from Mt Vernon Fairfield and Bell. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday night February 11 at 7 30 in the Mt Vernon Post Office.

Sister of Late Mayor Is Dead

Mrs Gussie Courtney 80 of Chicago died this morning. Former Mt Vernon resident, daughter of E V and Mary Satterfield, sister of former Mayor C C Satterfield. Born and raised in Mt Vernon, attended local schools. Widow of Roger Courtney, last survivor of her immediate family.

Parked Cars Hit Driver Arrested in Cen tralia

Eugene Schneider of Centralia was arrested Saturday night by city police on a reckless driving charge. His car struck two parked cars, one at Ninth and Main and another on East Main Street. He was to be taken before Magistrate A. M. Dulaney later today.

GI Checks Arrive for Mt Vernon World War II Veterans

World War II GI insurance dividend checks began arriving in Mt Vernon. At least three area veterans, Joe Boyle, Dick Hall, and Virgil Pollard, received their checks today. Mailing began last week at a rate of 200000 per day.

Nine Blizzard Deaths in U S

The storm across the Northern Plains Rockies and Northwest states and into Canada caused at least 52 deaths nationwide. Nine died in the northwest blizzard including seven in two plane crashes and a mother with three daughters in a highway crash. Others perished in winds floods and traffic incidents. A separate scene on Lake Winnebago Wisconsin saw ice floe breakup endangering 250 autos and up to 1,000 fishermen. most were rescued as the ice moved away.

Plans for 2nd Mt Ver Industry Tour

A noon meeting at Robb's Coffee House planned the second Mt Ver non teacher industry tour. Representatives from industries and business houses, plus school principals and superintendents, attended. The monthly event will send 250 rural and city teachers to 20 Mt Vernon establishments. The first tour was successful. the next is set for February 5.

A 30 ton motor ship Risei Maru sank today off Hokkaido. Eighteen crew members are missing and feared drowned. The captain's body has been recovered.

Nurse Dies of Butterfly Fever in Illinois Hospital

In Tl, a 22 year old nurse Miss Jacqueline Wall died at Marshall Browning Hospital from lupus known as butterfly fever. Her twin sister Jeannette died of the same disease on January 21, 1948. They were daughters of Ossie Wall an executive at Peabody Coal Company's No. 14 Mine. The company plane ferried Jacqueline to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for treatment last August.

Two Men Arrested For Burglary At Mitchell Home

City police last night arrested two men, Tloward Graham and Plomer Flanagan, charged with stealing items from the garage at John R. Mitchell’s Richview Road residence. The stolen articles, including glassware, Christmas decorations, skating shoes, badminton rackets, a meat grinder, a bird house, and other items, were recovered and held at police headquarters. Both suspects were in city jail this morning.

Fatal Accident Near Nashville Satisfies Early Report

Curt Stenbeck a 48 year old Chicago man died after his car rolled four miles east of Nashville on U S highway 460 Saturday. Coroner Bert Jolliff said the cause was not known but the vehicle apparently slipped and overturned while trying to regain the pavement. Stenbeck a native of Norrkoping Sweden, is survived by Mrs Ray Dahlgren of Chicago.

Riley Infant Dies Last Night

Harry Robert Riley infant of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Robert Riley of Mt. Vernon died at 8 00 p m Sunday at St John Hospital in Springfield. Born Saturday in Salem Iowa the child died after birth and funeral was held at 3 00 p m today at Pleasant Hill cemetery with Rev Bayne Wilson officiating. Survived by the parents is a half brother Ronnie Eugene at home.

Two Minor Thefts Reported Over Weekend

Two thefts were reported to police headquarters during the weekend. Roy Jones of 8309 Sta street said a wheel and tire and a fuel pump were stolen from his automobile. Clarence Shane of 692 Main reported theft of two mirrors from his car.

Three Accidents Reported In Mt Vernon Injures One

Jerry Brown of RED 3 was injured at 6 25 pm today in a collision on South 2th Street between his car and a truck driven by R A Andrews. Brown received emergency treatment at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital and was released. No injuries in two weekend crashes. Homer Flanagan of RED 2 and Blaine Highsmith of RED 7 collided at Fourth and Jordan last night. Thomas L Casey of Bonnie and Virgil Pollard of RED 2 collided at Tenth and Vaught streets Sunday.

Mt Vernon Troops Deliver Aid To Shawneetown Evacuees

Mt Vernon troops run boats and jeeps across a flooded highway to Shawneetown. A tent city for refugees is set up with twenty Red Cross tents across from Company headquarters in the new Shawneetown. Capt Albright arranged contact by telephone and radio links for families to reach guardsmen in emergencies.

Dolph Dulany 66 Dies Near Keenes in Illinois Farm Country

Dolph Dulany a farmer aged 66 died at 4 45 am at his home five miles southwest of Keenes after a period of ill health. Born March 7 1883 in Jefferson county he was married to Cora B Dickey who survives. Funeral will be Wednesday at 2 pm at Keenes Missionary Baptist church with Rev Bird Green officiating and burial in Hickory Hill cemetery. He leaves four sons Floyd Raymond Vernon Tee and two daughters Noma Boyd Esther Winesburgh and Elsie Dulany, a brother Hobart, two half sisters, and 16 grandchildren.
