Norman Pearson, 25, charged with fatally shooting St. Louis Patrolman Frank Dobler during a traffic dispute, hanged himself with a bed sheet in his jail cell after being moved from hospital where he had gunshot wounds from a December confrontation with police. Elderly man dies after racially charged tavern shooting
In East St. Louis a 71-year-old man, Harry Grenawalt, died after a racially motivated shooting at The Spot tavern during his 42nd wedding anniversary celebration. One Man Hurt In Benton Mine Small Fire
A small fire at the Old Ben 24 coal hoist shaft near Benton Illinois hospitalized one man with hand burns. About 20 miners escaped. fire started by a cutting torch igniting oil. The mine employs about 300. 20 workers were repairing when incident occurred. Danny Thomas of West Frankfort was hospitalized for hand burns. The blaze was out before rescue teams arrived.
