U S Marines in an 8200 yard amphibious operation on the Batangan Peninsula near Saigon faced their first combat today as they tightened the cordon on a Viet Cong stronghold 340 miles northeast of Saigon. Rear Adm. W. W. Behrens Jr. of Harrisburg Pa reported the Marines repulsed an enemy breakout attempt, with two killed and seven wounded in the fierce engagement.

Reds Blow Up Loos Munitions Near Vientiane
Communists Wathet Lao guerrillas destroyed a government munitions depot about eight miles east of Vientiane early today. Explosions were heard for five hours after the raid as government forces repulsed a 30 minute firefight and the guerrillas used bazookas against the depot containing ammunition and supplies for the 5th Military District. No casualties were reported.
