Crude oil pours from a 22-inch Buckeye Pipeline in Lima Ohio flooding sewers and streets over a 90 block area. Police and National Guard evacuate about 8000 residents as firemen wash streets and flush sewers. Authorities hope restrictions lift at noon after six hours work.
Certificates of Approval shift charters for Cowden Dix Hoyleton and Olney banks. First State Bank of Dix raises capital from 30 000 to 60 000 with a 1200 share issue to be paid as a stock dividend. Cowden Bank doubles capital to 100 000 via 1000 shares. Hogekon State and Savings adds capital to 100 000 through 4000 shares, all via a capital stock dividend.
George D Williams, longtime Mt Vernon real estate figure, drives to his office on his 91st birthday. He recalls driving daily since 1912, bought his first auto license for 5800, and plans to keep working daily. His family includes a 97th birthday in July for a relative in Bellington and a brother who died at 94.
In Los Angeles AP report, both prosecution and defense focus on Sirhan Bishara Sirhan’s motive in the Kennedy assassination trial. Defense attorney Grant B Cooper says jurors will decide intent, while noting Sirhan fired the shot that killed Senator Robert F Kennedy after his California primary win on June 5. The case hinges on diminished responsibility as a legal angle, with Rosa Molina becoming the first juror tentatively seated.
Bruce Reynolds, the last of Britain’s Great Train Robbery gang, is sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to planning and taking part in the 1963 heist that stole 120 mail bags. Detective work by Scotland Yard culminated in his arrest at Torquay last November. about $1 million of the loot has been recovered. Eleven accomplices are serving 3 to 30 year terms.
Two U S Marines battalions landed on Batangan Peninsula 340 miles northeast of Saigon, beginning an 8 200 man allied push to surround up to 800 North Vietnamese regulars and guerrillas. The operation aims to pacify a 5 000 to 10 000 population area with slow, bloody progress and limited early resistance. Brig Gen Howard Cooksey leads the inland cordon as Navy ships secure the landing.
Dr. John Alford District 80 Superintendent told West Salem PTA that a revised Sept 1 1969 completion target for the J. L. Buford School may not be met. He noted weather slowed progress though he expects the Jan 1 1969 date to be met and hopes for the Sept 1 revision. board to decide on kitchen plans amid PTA push for a larger kitchen.
Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov rode Soyuz 4 into orbit in a powerful carrier rocket. Tass reported his orbit reached about 139 miles at apogee and 107 miles at perigee with an 88.25 minute cycle as Moscow claimed possible plans for a manned linkup. Shatalov described as a six year cosmonaut trainee, married with two children, sent a farewell broadcast promising to meet again on Earth.
In Mattoon Illinois the mother Nancy Ann Murphy Potter 26 killed her two children Elisa Ann 5 and Ronnie Lee 8 then shot herself. The younger child died at once while Ronnie Lee died Monday in a hospital.
President Johnson praised the nation’s record, saying a final verdict will be that Americans can say we tried. The New York gala featured 400 guests from both parties as he signaled a valedictory tone before flying back to Washington.

IPAA represents about 6 000 independent oil and gas producers with members in all US petroleum producing areas.
Congressman Kenneth J. Gray announced in Washington that the U S Soil Conservation Service approved a plan to develop 146,659 acres in Jefferson Hamilton and Franklin counties in southern Illinois. The effort will fund soil and water districts to plan and build reservoirs and other flood control projects linked to the Big Muddy River Basin initiative.
A Scandinavian Airlines DC 9 plunged into the Pacific near Los Angeles International Airport during a rainy landing. Of 45 aboard, 30 survived, 4 were confirmed dead, 9 of the remaining 11 were missing, and others were unaccounted for. Rescue operations continued through the night as divers searched the wreckage.
Mary Leu Greer aged 20 of 312 Opdyke Avenue was arrested by city police yesterday afternoon and charged with stealing $852 from Wilford Perrymion of McLeansboro. The theft occurred Sunday night in a car at Jaycee Lake parking lot. Bond set at $4,000 with $850 recovered.
