Patman seeks government interest on bank deposits

Washington AP Rep Wright Patman chairman of the House Banking Committee said he will push to earn interest for the government on the roughly 3.3 billion it keeps on deposit in some 11,700 of the nation’s 13,500 banks and to allow banks to pay interest on private citizens’ checking accounts. He said the treasury held an average of more than 3.3 billion in tax and loan accounts during the year ending June 30, with banks receiving a subsidy of about 267 million in effect.

Man Drives on Snowy Tracks Near Eldorado Illinois

Edward Gooch and a passenger drove a quarter mile on railroad tracks in five inches of snow after a wrong turn in Eldorado Illinois. They noticed the bumpy roadbed and only realized the danger when a freight train approached. The train was halted briefly while the car was towed to safety.

Shirley Dillingham returned to work in Springfield yesterday while sisters Jane and Patricia were expected to resume today after a weekend accident in which their Volkswagen was struck in Effingham. Mr Dillingham and brothers brought them from Effingham after hospital release. A snowstorm delayed travel as Carol and Pat McCole joined the family returning to Springfield with snowplows on Route 66. Patricia suffered facial cuts and Jane sustained a head impact against the windshield.
