Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie Byars were to be held at 2 30 pm today in Chicago with burial in the city. The former Jefferson county resident died Tuesday at her home in Chicago. Survivors include a sister Mrs. Orville Lowrey of this city.
Mrs. Walter B Price of 116 Oakland avenue has learned that a cousin A H Coleman Jr died yesterday at his home in Pontiac Alabama at age 48. He was a former Jefferson county resident and graveside rites are set for 4 00 p m Tuesday at Oakwood cemetery in this city following funeral services in Pontiac. He leaves his mother Mrs Ethel Coleman of Pontiac and was preceded in death by his father the Rev A H Coleman Sr in September 19.
Clydus Rhine 69 of Dale died Monday at Hamilton Memorial Hospital McLeansboro. Rites 1 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Hill Baptist Church Rev William Auxier officiating. Burial in Hickory Hill Cemetery. Survivors include three sons Ray Rhine Dale McLeansboro Wood River. brother Ike Rhine Bethalto Ill. three sisters Colleen Rhine McLeansboro Lotha McGill Chula Vista Calif Margaret Hawkins Bethalto. seven grandchildren.
Funeral services for Frank Trausch are set for 9:00 am Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Piopolis with Rev. Minard Dunn officiating. Burials in the adjoining cemetery follow. The body lies in state at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, with Rosary at 7:30 pm today. Trausch, 82, of near Dahlgren, died 6:35 pm Monday at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, born August 20, 1883 in Wisconsin, survived by widow Louise Beacle, four sons Vincent Evansville IN William Harold Edward Trausch of Dahlgren, nine daughters, two sisters, and one grandchild.
ADR/2 and Mrs Raymond Norvell McGee welcome son Michael Ray born December 30 in Base Hospital Puerto Rico weighing six pounds eight ounces. Janet Johnson mother and Harry and Mrs Johnson grandparents. Jack Shelton and Janet Johnson of Columbia, S C. also announce birth of son Mark Alan weighing seven pounds twelve ounces born Tuesday in Baptist Hospital Columbia. Grandparents are W P Blanks of Columbia and Glen Shelton of Mt Vernon. Erie Canal winter closure ends its 80th season of operation.

Marlboro Mass. The school board reversed an earlier vote to name a new high school after John F Kennedy after a student petition with 300 signatures. The petition argued it would be farcical to name the school Kennedy since many buildings already bear his name.
CHICAGO AP Powell Illinois secretary of state Paul Powell filed a suit seeking Cook County representation on the Illinois Supreme Court. The case challenges Article Six of the 1962 judicial amendment which allows judges to run unopposed every 10 years and effectively excludes Cook County from the high court. Dean Romiti of DePaul University law school had originally sued to force the election of three Cook County justices in the next general or a special election.
A Joliet woman, Donna McDaniel, 26, was rescued after she floated 20 feet off the Lake Michigan shore on a chunk of ice. Policeman Anthony Oddo and partner Joseph Green pulled her to shore after Oddo lassoed the rope to reach her as bystanders helped. McDaniel, who lives at 319 Hunter Street, Joliet, was in Wesley Memorial Hospital today recovering from shock and exposure.
Troops from the U S 1st Infantry Division the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the Royal Australian Regiment continue operations as U S bombers avoid North Vietnam for the 20th day. Hanoi denounces U S while Viet Cong hints at negotiating terms with the National Liberation Front if Washington agrees to direct talks. Nonaligned leaders Tito Nasser Boumedienne push Hanoi toward ceasefire and formal negotiations.
The president plans to press Congress for consumer protection bills that avoid Treasury costs and to push action on truth in packaging and truth in lending. He may seek funds for rent subsidies 30 million and National Teachers Corps 36 million, and advocate expanding Food for Peace and an international educational aid project. High priority is repeal of Taft Hartley Act section 14B.

Fire at the century old San Francisco church broke out in a new wing but was confined to upper areas and controlled within an hour. Damage estimated at a little over 300000 dollars. cause not immediately determined. Fire Chief William Murray notes the blaze was far less than the 1906 disaster that destroyed the interior and roof.

Illinois to open bids January 28 for upstate I 57 paving and landscaping along the north south super highway. No I 57 paving in Jefferson county this year. Upstate work includes paving, earth grading, concrete approaches near Clifton Coles county and two railroad grade separation structures in Iroquois county. Jefferson county only weed control spraying bid this month.
Harry E. Stamper Jr. is named loan manager for Universal C I T s Mt Vernon office by district manager Harold S. Brubaker. A Benton IL native, Stamper is a Western Military Academy graduate of 1951 who served in the Army and has eight years in St. Louis consumer finance. Universal CIT, a pioneer in sales financing, offers installment loans for autos, homes, and major goods through 500 offices nationwide. The Stamper family resides at 2917 Jaminson Mt. Vernon with daughter Holly.
Delmar W. Rowe of Bloomington Indiana bought the 36,000 acre 3-C Ranch, 43 miles northeast of Tucson, from Boston widow Mrs Theodore J. Vaitses. The purchase was announced Tuesday and Rowe said he has not decided on plans for the cattle spread.
Edwin A. Smith of 1412 Harrison was fined $10 in circuit court yesterday for lacking valid vehicle registration. The brief hearing resulted in the monetary penalty with no further action noted.
Captain Jerry R. Dycus, 28, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orval Dycus, is in Viet Nam with the U S Marines. He arrived in Da Nang January 4 for a 13 month tour. He will head a General Communications Center handling about 50,000 messages monthly and is quartered in an old French barracks. His wife Carol Ann and son James Bryan reside in Champaign with her mother. The article also notes a $10,523.79 damage suit against Leta F. Towns over a March 31, 1965 collision on Old Highway 15 east of Mt. Vernon, with Maxine Tucker seeking $10,000 for injuries and Grover Tucker $523.79 for auto damages.

Fred Douglas of Detroit was injured when his car skidded on rain slick Route 37 at Bakerville, plunged an embankment, and struck a telephone pole. The pole snapped, Douglas was rushed to Jefferson Memorial Hospital for X rays. injuries not yet determined. He resides at 5111 Greyfriars Street.
Mt. Vernon Junior College librarian Imogene Book was named to the Teacher Education Professional Standards Commission of the National Education Association. She attended a three day TEPS meeting at the Chase Hotel in St Louis where the focus was fostering career teaching and internship programs for professional training. Book is the sole Illinois junior college representative on the commission, with other members from universities and four year colleges.
Members of the Mildred Sherrod Federated Club will meet Thursday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of Mrs Georgia Alexander located at 517 South 13th Street. Mrs Nettie Lee Porter serves as president of the club.
