Mrs. Georgia Ballard Burnette 72 died at home on Fourth Street likely from a weekend stroke. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm at Pulley Funeral Chapel with Lester Pifer officiating and Oakwood Cemetery burial. She was born February 22 1883 in Jefferson County and survived by three sons four daughters seven grandchildren and one sister.

Maggie Foutch, 63, of Sandoval and former Mt. Vernon resident, died Monday morning at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia after residing in Sandoval two years. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Cox and Martin funeral home with burial in Sandoval cemetery. Survived by husband Charles Foutch, two sons Ralph and Earl, a daughter Bertha Rizzon, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was the daughter of John and Mary Burtton and previously married Alvin Foutch. She belonged to the Methodist church at Sandoval, American Legion Auxiliary and the Pocahontas lodge.

Jury Rules For Defendant After Trial Here Today
A five woman seven man jury ruled for the defendant in a $4,250 circuit court suit. Andrew Burrill sued Louis Beguelin for a brush fire on October 27, 1952 that spread to Burrill’s farm and destroyed his home. The verdict found Beguelin not guilty. A second trial began in circuit court with Rufus E. Fisher suing Aubrey Burgin for $25,000 injuries and $371.53 car damage from a February 16, 1954 Mt. Vernon accident.

Humidity and overcast conditions eased fire danger in southern Illinois ending a six week stretch with no reports of forest or field fires. State forestry HQ at Benton noted the lowest danger level in days as rain or snow was forecast to bring further relief. Since December a dry spell had sparked hundreds of acres to burn, including a 500 acre inferno in Alexander County. On Monday units fought six fires covering 66 acres, with a 100 acre blaze northeast of Johnston City one of 12 battled Sunday.
