Mt Vernon area residents visit friends and travel

Mt Vernon residents and visitors are reported in this weekend and today’s notes. Individuals from East Peoria Marion Sparta and other areas were seen in Mt Vernon East St Louis Springfield Belleville and St Louis. Several families traveled to Daytona Beach Anna Maria and Tucson while others attended local events and hospital visits.

Democrats Take Over State Reins at Inaugural Ball

Democrats assembled about 6,000 guests at the state armory for a televised inaugural program honoring Stevenson and other new officers. Adlai Stevenson and family arrived by limousine from the governor’s mansion after a welcome at the railroad station. Stevenson, his wife and two sons stayed in a downtown hotel before moving into the executive mansion.

Delta Kappa Gamma Meets at Centralia

Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma society for women teachers held a meeting Sunday afternoon January 9 at the Shanklin residence in Centralia. Hostesses Marguerite and Agnes Shanklin Miss Dorothy Jennings and Miss Rachel Wilks welcomed members and guests. The program included a talk by Miss Cecile Coombs of East St. Louis and a review of the society’s twenty years followed by four speeches on taxes. Local members from Mt. Vernon attended and a silver tea funded a scholarship for teachers.

Funeral services for Pvt. Henry Russell Murray of Irvington who was killed in World War II will be held Friday at Myers Chapel at 1 30 p m with Rev. Return Body Of Sgt Moreton To United States

The body of S/Sgt Glenn H Moreton of Mt Vernon is being returned for funeral services and reburial. He was killed in action May 15 1945 over Mindoro Philippines while serving as tail gunner on a B 24 with the Fifth Air Force. Veteran Shot In the Stomach In Coulterville

Randolph county sheriff Rich ard Bendorf says 27 year old veteran Harold Folden was shot in the stomach by a 16 year old after an argument. Folden, in serious condition, is at Jefferson Barracks veterans hospital. Folden had earlier argued with Eva Miles and struck her. her son Stephen Miles then fired with a .22 rifle, and is held for investigation in Chester.

Hike on Postal Rates for Newspapers Proposed

President Truman proposed higher postal rates on newspapers magazines and advertising circulars moving as second and third class mail. The budget message seeks a 250 million dollar increase to reduce a deficit projected at over 400 million.
