Mt Vernon residents and visitors are reported in this weekend and today’s notes. Individuals from East Peoria Marion Sparta and other areas were seen in Mt Vernon East St Louis Springfield Belleville and St Louis. Several families traveled to Daytona Beach Anna Maria and Tucson while others attended local events and hospital visits.
Democrats assembled about 6,000 guests at the state armory for a televised inaugural program honoring Stevenson and other new officers. Adlai Stevenson and family arrived by limousine from the governor’s mansion after a welcome at the railroad station. Stevenson, his wife and two sons stayed in a downtown hotel before moving into the executive mansion.
Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma society for women teachers held a meeting Sunday afternoon January 9 at the Shanklin residence in Centralia. Hostesses Marguerite and Agnes Shanklin Miss Dorothy Jennings and Miss Rachel Wilks welcomed members and guests. The program included a talk by Miss Cecile Coombs of East St. Louis and a review of the society’s twenty years followed by four speeches on taxes. Local members from Mt. Vernon attended and a silver tea funded a scholarship for teachers.
The Wesleyan Service Guild of Wesley Methodist church will meet at the church at 6 30 PM for a potluck supper. Business session will follow with a special program. Guest speaker will be Miss Emily Kelley. All members urged to attend and bring a prospective member.
The Jefferson County Dental Society holds its regular meeting at Robb's Coffee Shop at 6:45 tonight.
The Harmony Home Bureau Unit will meet with Mrs Rosa Scott on Wednesday January 12. Lessons will be given by Miss Anna Betty Huck. Members will roll call share ideas to better themselves for the new year. Visitors are welcome.
The Rome Day Unit of the Home Bureau meets January 11 at 1 30 pm with Mrs Allie Rollinson. Miss Anna Betty Huck Home Adviser will give the major lesson. Visitors are welcome.
Mt Vernon Chapter 233 eastern star holds stated meeting at Masonic Hall on Tuesday January 11 at 730 pm with Evelyn Bell WM and Jessie Hill secretary. Jubilee Class of Free Will Baptist church meets January 11 at 730 pm with Mr and Mrs Howard Flora visiting welcome. Happy Circle Club meets at Lynchburg road with 20 members and one guest Mrs Ben Roeder. afternoon program includes songs prayers and birthday tribute for January birthdays.

The Gleaners Class of Park Avenue Baptist church will hold a class social Tuesday January 11 at 7 30 p m at the home of Mrs Addie Allen 1114 Gaskins avenue Lincoln P T A The January meeting of the Lincoln school Parent Teacher Association will be held Thursday afternoon January 13 at 2 30 in the assembly room The school number will be presented by fourth grade pupils Charles J Pardee dean of boys at Mt Vernon Township high school will speak on The Civil Rights of the Individual There will be the regular Happy Hour for pre school age children and children of the first three grades All parents are urged to attend.
The Camaraderie Club of First Presbyterian held a double program with Georgia Barnes leading devotional services and Gene Steeley presenting slides on soil erosion in the Holy Land. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lathrop presented This World featuring a narrative poem by Guy with Ruth interludes, followed by songs set to music. Refreshments were served by club members, and guests included Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lathrop and Mrs. E. E. Curtis.
The Sarah Circle of the West minister Society of the First Presbyterian church will meet at 308 South Ninth Street Apartment 4 at 7 30 Tuesday evening with Mrs Maxine Mce Clinton hosting.

Mrs. Charles S. Green hosted a 12 o clock Saturday birthday dinner at 1121 North Street for her husband and his mother Mrs. W. D. Milner of Fairfield Road. Five generations gathered including out of town guests from Missouri and Illinois. The afternoon featured visiting and music as gifts were exchanged.

Mrs Allen and Mrs John Allen host Summersville Round Dozen Club all day meeting at her home on Wednesday. Deborah Circle Westminster church will hold first meeting of year Tuesday at two o'clock with co chair Mrs Robert Harvey assisted by Mrs Gilbert Wood members urged to attend.
The Dorcas Class of Logan Street Baptist church will meet at Mrs. Frank Mc Gath s home 718 South 23rd Street on Tuesday evening January 11 at 7 30 o clock.
The Salem South Quarterly Women's Missionary Union meets Wednesday at 10 in Park Avenue Baptist Church to explore Doors of the Work. Edith Roberts State Worker attends for the morning service while Park Avenue ladies lead the devotionals. Robert Grammar Assocational Missionary delivers the morning message. Logan Street ladies oversee the afternoon devotionals.
Chief of Police Verner Pigg returns to duty after a vacation in California visiting Vallejo San Francisco Oakland and Los Angeles. The piece notes men tip more generously than women and women tip heavily only when with other women.
Funeral services for Pvt. Henry Russell Murray of Irvington who was killed in World War II will be held Friday at Myers Chapel at 1 30 p m with Rev. Marsh Harpoole officiating burial in Wolf Prairie cemetery McClellan township. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will in charge. The body arrives in Mount Vernon at 855 a m Wednesday and remains at Myers Chapel with calling after 10 a m Thursday. Murray born June 27 1925 in Jefferson county was the son of Fred and Jennie Ballard Murray. He died August 1 1944 in France while with the Infantry. Survived by wife Shirley of Centralia and by his parents two brothers Orville and John Robert Murray of Irvington and two sisters Evelyn Dodillet of Centralia and Freda Murray of Irvington.
The body of S/Sgt Glenn H Moreton of Mt Vernon is being returned for funeral services and reburial. He was killed in action May 15 1945 over Mindoro Philippines while serving as tail gunner on a B 24 with the Fifth Air Force. He entered service in October 1943 and left the States on Christmas Day 1944. Born February 4 1919 he was married to Maxine Smith and survived by his wife his mother one son Glenn Michael and two brothers Mark and Bob.
Randolph county sheriff Rich ard Bendorf says 27 year old veteran Harold Folden was shot in the stomach by a 16 year old after an argument. Folden, in serious condition, is at Jefferson Barracks veterans hospital. Folden had earlier argued with Eva Miles and struck her. her son Stephen Miles then fired with a .22 rifle, and is held for investigation in Chester.
Fire Captain Julius Lustig sustained burns to his hand arm and face while fighting a blaze at Harlows Texico Service station at Eighth and Main. A clerk Oshibee Smallwood caused ignition washing clothes in gasoline. Minor smoke damage reported. no injuries from a separate grass fire at 209 North Eleventh and no damage to the warehouse.
President Truman proposed higher postal rates on newspapers magazines and advertising circulars moving as second and third class mail. The budget message seeks a 250 million dollar increase to reduce a deficit projected at over 400 million. White House aides push elimination of low second and third class rates while Postmaster General Donaldson says newspapers and magazines won’t be moved to full paying basis. First class mail remains unchanged.

Mr and Mrs Jesse Robert Dalton of Fairfield welcomed a son named Michael Jay this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. A ten pound son named Roger Bruce was born Saturday January 8 to Mr and Mrs Burrell Dodson of 705 Perkins Avenue at their home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday for Louis Cloyd 72, a former Mt. Vernon resident who died Friday in Sesser. Services at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Grove church three miles northeast of Sesser with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. The body will lie at the family home in Lesser. Survived by third wife Alice Stubblefield three sons Raymond Mt. Vernon Stanley Chicago LeRoy Macedonia and three daughters Edith St. Louis Louise Arizona Hazel Lesser. One daughter Veronica and two wives preceded him.
Townspeople honored Dr Whited for his lifetime of service as the country physician. He never refused a call, worked through bad weather, and eased pain for all patients regardless of payment, prompting gifts including a car in a community shower.

Milton D. Forsyth declares candidacy for mayor of Mt Vernon subject to the February 22 Democratic primary. A Mt Vernon native, he attended Mt Vernon schools and James Millikin University, played on a state champion basketball team, and worked at Mammoth Department Store and Mt Vernon Car Manufacturing. He lives at 815 North Street, is married with son Jimmy, and serves on the Mt Vernon high school board of education.
Mrs. Elsie Tate of Kell aged 61 wife of Everett Tate died at 9 30 am today at Salem Memorial Hospital. Services planned for Wednesday at 2 pm at Kell Baptist Church with Rev Ross Partridge officiating burial in County Line cemetery. Body to lie in state at family home east of Kell after noon Tuesday friends may call. Survived by husband Everett a son Arnold of Kell and two grandchildren.
Elliott Roosevelt is reported to be recovering satisfactorily from a minor operation at Leroy Sanitarium. The private hospital said the late president's son was operated on Saturday and his family declined to comment on his ailment.
Berthal G. Keip, a retired railroad electrician, died at 12 30 a.m. Sunday at Jefferson County. He was 65 years nine months and 21 days old and resided at Lith and Warren. Services at Myers Chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Sam McCoy officiating. burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Survived by five sons Ellis, Paul, Charles, Donald and Jimmie and two grandchildren. born March 18, 1883 in Salem Illinois. married Ruby Leatha Ellis in 1919, she died February 4, 1939.
Police report a radio was stolen Saturday from a car parked in the Hotel Emmerson lot. The owner is H. J Kilorman of St. Louis.
Fines handed down before Magistrate E. W. Threlkeld included Eagle White colored with 105.40 for reckless driving Nathaniel Everett colored 30.40 on drunk and disturbance charge Robert Crocker 13.40 on drunk charge.
