Robert Lee Boswell 41 of Mt Vernon had his appeal denied by the Fifth District Appellate Court. Boswell pleaded guilty last March to arson causing 2500 dollars in damage to a home at 215 South 17th Street. He was sentenced to two to three years in prison.

Explosives experts defused a bomb attached to a half gallon gasoline can inside a long unused Illinois Central freight building in East St. Louis. Detective Curran found four sticks of dynamite a battery a railroad watch and the gasoline. The device was timed to explode at 4 20 p m and was deactivated with help from the Treasury and St Louis Bomb Squad.

Two Die in Nursing Home Fire Blamed on Cigarette
MADISON Wisconsin AP two residents died and eight others were injured in a nursing home fire blamed on a cigarette. Allen Philipsen 22 a UW Madison student died of smoke inhalation while helping evacuate, Rolland Peterson 60 also died after hospital transfer. The blaze confined to the fourth floor of Allen Hall Residential Care Center damaged about 55 000 dollars. Witnesses said Philipsen carried a fire extinguisher and alerted staff before collapsing. Fire officials noted the building lacked sprinklers and enclosed stairwells hindered spread.
