Joe Norris Sesser Dies at 69 In Christopher

Joe Norris Sesser 69, of Sesser, died Monday night at Miners Hospital in Christopher. He was a retired C B and Q Railroad agent and billing clerk born February 7, 1903 in Waltonville, son of Wayman and Anna Norris. Survived by wife Dorothy Harris, two sons Wayman and Robert, a brother Royal Norris of Mesa Arizona. Funeral held Thursday at Brayfield Funeral Home Lesser with Masonic rites at 7 p.m. Burial in Knob Prairie cemetery Waltonville.

A separate report notes the arrest of William Ray Edwards in the Oct. 25 Bank of Lesser robbery. he faces $50,000 bond and transfer to Franklin County jail. Police say the suspect used a revolver and fled in a green 1974 Monte Carlo.

Boston Schools Reopen Under Police Escort

Boston classes resumed at the South Boston High complex with hundreds of officers present. About 300 to 400 white pupils and 50 to 75 black children entered under protection of roughly 400 state, metropolitan, and local police. Pupils passed through metal detectors. only students and newsmen were allowed nearby as four schools reopened after Dec 11 racial violence.

Landowners Meet To Discuss Coal Lease Offers

Landowners from Shiloh Rome and northern McClellan Townships who were approached about coal leases will gather Tuesday evening at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church to learn about coal quantity and value. Forest Brown Myers Ejidson and John Turrel call the meeting to address present offers. Dr M E Hopkins Illinois State Geological Survey will speak on depth thickness and quality of coal formations under Shiloh Rome and McClellan Townships. Roy Webb Franklin County master farmer and Ewing-Northern Coal Association president will also present. A question answer period coal maps and bulletins will be shown and attendees can vote on forming a local group similar to the Ewing group. The meeting starts about 7 15 p m at 2424 Broadway.

Belle Rive Drag Line Walks Across Route 460

A massive drag line weighing five million pounds moved slowly across Route 460 near Belle Rive in a carefully controlled operation. Two large hydraulic legs steadied the machine while a ground man guided the operator by bell signals. The crew cleared a path, and bulldozers shored up edges as 7 foot steps were taken every 35 seconds.

Bomb blast in suitcase kills three in Cleveland home

Police said a suitcase bomb exploded inside a Cleveland frame house late Tuesday night killing three people and injuring three others in critical condition. Victims identified include Maryanne Sigley 21 Burdell Offitt 26 and 9 month old Steven Sigley.

DuQuoin Man Arrested in Stolen Car Here

A 33 year old DuQuoin man, William Wayne Knapp, was arrested at the intersection of 11th and Jordan Streets by Police Chief Fred Dedman around noon Tuesday for stealing a car owned by Jim Powell Route 3 from the Bank of Chinois parking lot. He remained jailed under $1,000 bond on a criminal trespass to a motor vehicle charge.

Five Illinois road firms plead guilty to bid rigging

Five road building firms admitted guilt in a bid rigging conspiracy involving Illinois projects from 1969 to 1972. Judge Harrington Wood scheduled sentencing for February 21 in Springfield. The defendants include Pautler Brothers of Chester Frank Nutty Inc. of Vienna Johnson County Asphalt Inc. of Red Bud D.M. Lake Construction Co. of Shelbyville and Standard Paving Co. of Chicago.
