Arla Gregory 73 of 1140 Maple St. dies at Good Samaritan Hospital. She and her husband ran Gregory Monument Co. in Mt. Vernon. Funeral Friday at 1 30 p m Hughey Pulley with burial Bethel Memorial Cemetery. Survived by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services for Eileen Hi Schweinfurth 0 who died Sunday at Jeffersonian Nursing Home will be at 1:30 p m Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev Robert Freytag officiating Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery Friends may call Myers Bari Chapel after 5 p m Friday and until 12 noon Saturday when the body will be moved to the church She was born June 28 1896 at Iowa Park Texas daughter of Newton Campbell Herrod and Ariadne Wilson Herrod She married Carl Schweinfurth who died in 1966 She was a housewife and member of First Presbyterian Church She is survived by a son Carl Lincoln Schweinfurth Mt Vernon and several nieces and nephews
Ashton Arnaud 74 of Route 1 Ashley died Friday in Mt Vernon. Born December 19 1902 in New Orleans he was son of Joseph and Sarah Fowler Arnaud. Retired from Warner Electric Co in Mt Vernon and St Louis he married Helen Jaegers June 30 1936 in Missouri. Survived by wife three sons three daughters one brother and one sister twelve grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Burial in Ashley Cemetery officiated by Rev Merritt Strickland.
A child identified as Joseph J. Nichols, stepson of Calvin Elkins, was struck and killed while crossing Illinois 157 near Collinsville by a vehicle driven by 21 year old Gary D. Chapman of Edwardsville, state troopers said.
Mt Vernon grain prices at 10:00 a.m. list soybeans 6.81, wheat 2.48, corn 2.32 with assorted egg and butter quotes. National Stock Yards hogs and cattle receipts mix. New York stock market declines persist with the Dow down earlier and volume strong on the NYSE.
Peoria Illinois AP reports Circuit Judge Samuel G Harrod II criticizes a one month suspension for ordering a haircut as sentencing, saying it intimidates judges. Harrod seeks rehearing and faults three of five hearing panel members as political appointees without trial experience. The Illinois Courts Commission disciplined him after a hearing prompted by the ACLU for a defendant ordered to obtain a haircut.
Mt Vernon district manager Boyd Holmes says the 1977 earnings limit rises to 3000 for under 72, with reductions above 3000 and full benefits in months not earning or working. 72 and over retain full benefits. tax rates stay at 5.85 employers and employees, 7.9 self employed. Base rises to 16500.
AP report states Roger L. Harrington of Anna was killed Tuesday night after being struck by a passenger bus driven by Marion E. Cochran of Waterloo. Police said the incident occurred in Anna, and authorities are investigating the fatal crash.
Rep. Paul Simon of Illinois plans to lead renewed Black Lung legislation in the 95th Congress after the House earlier passed a softer standard. He secured Sen. Jennings Randolph’s pledge to bring the bill to the Senate. The proposal would grant benefits after 15 years mining coal, replacing the current 25 to 30 year thresholds. Simon also seeks a Budget Committee seat, possibly leaving the Post Office and Civil Service panel.
The Illinois Board of Higher Education staff proposes a 13.2 percent rise to a $924.2 million operating budget for fiscal 1978. Universities total $589.2 million, with major lines including U of Illinois at $273.3 million and Southern Illinois at $112 million. community colleges $124.7 million. scholarships $94.8 million. pensions $53.6 million. miscellaneous $61.9 million.
James M. Mangis, 30, Route 2, Mt Vernon, jailed after arrest on deceptive practices. He faces a bad check charge of 251.95 to Biagi's Electronics for a CB radio on November 3. Mangis is also wanted in Clinton, Marion, Wayne, Clay, Pratt and Champaign counties. He remains in the county jail under a 7000 bond.
Five Mt. Vernon residents who backed Jimmy Carter last year received invitations to his January 20 inauguration. Marilyn Stewart and Chuck Eckert, co-managers of the local Carter campaign, Mark Terry, Stewart’s brother, and Casey Junior High eighth graders Beth Renshaw and Patrice Henschen were invited, with plans for attendance and a January 19 Mondale reception and post inauguration party.
Gov elect James R. Thompson offers 10 percent refunds to about 22,000 campaign contributors from a $250,000 surplus. Donors must notify Thompson within 200 days. letters were sent on personal stationery. He notes $50,000 from the state covers transition costs, but he expects $75,000 in expenses. The surplus equals about 0 percent of the $2.5 million raised.
More than 4,000 used eyeglasses from Mt Vernon area residents are prepared for shipment to New Eyes for the Needy in Short Hills New Jersey. The 3,000 glasses now ready were collected in nine months. The program repairs glasses and distributes them worldwide to those unable to afford new eyewear. The Mt Vernon Lions Club and local volunteers assist funding for eye care when New Eyes pays only part of the cost.

The Jefferson Hamilton County Health Services Association will hold its monthly meeting Thursday at noon at Bonanza Steak House. The group voted in December to incorporate as a not-for-profit agency. Phyliss Roltmann of Nature Trail Nursing Home chairs the committee. Jack Roberts of Comprehensive Services, Inc. is president. Roberts invites any service provider physician or health official to attend to discuss local health plans and events.
The Jefferson County Humane Society board of directors will meet Thursday January 20 at 7 30 p m in the Illinois Power building. The public is invited to offer suggestions and ask questions about the society and its work.
