A car collision on US 50 near Flora Wisconsin killed Harry Car 59 of Salem and injured a Rural Enia couple and their teen daughter. State police blamed a tire blowout as the cause the Flora hospital reports the fatality and injuries from the wreck also involved a Fear’s truck.
A fire at 10 40 this morning in the 900 block of Jordan Street gutted the first floor apartment of Rose Johnson at 907 Jordan and caused smoke damage to four other units, a barber shop, and a beauty shop. Firemen confined the blaze to one apartment with smoke damage upstairs.
An Associated Press survey shows 562 people died on national highways during the three day New Year weekend, a record for holiday periods. Final toll could reach 600 if deaths do not slow, with earlier council estimates between 360 and 440.
In Hollywood AP report, Marie Mc Donald's death was ruled accidental five days earlier. Sunday, her sixth husband, producer Donald F. Taylor, 47, was found dead near his bedroom, with investigators citing possible overdose and drug intoxication. Taylor’s body was discovered by William Baile and Denise Wharf. Mc Donald’s death earlier was deemed accidental by coroner team.
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered shifting of future steel deliveries away from Bethlehem Steel and other firms raising prices. President Johnson called Bethlehem's move unjustified and warned of inflation while Bethlehem executives argued improvements justify higher costs. Government sources hinted federal purchases could drop if Bethlehem does not withdraw its increase. The administration believes pressuring other firms could prompt Bethlehem to reverse the raise.
Rising water from overflowing creeks forced several farming families south of Poplar Bluff to evacuate as heavy weekend rain prompted road closures. The Weather Bureau called the flooding strictly minor and expected water to abate today. rainfall totals included Poplar Bluff 4.77 inches, Sikeston 4, and Cape Girardeau 2.9. State Highway 142 near Maylor in Ripley County and U.S. 67 south of Poplar Bluff were affected with closures into the Arkansas border.
New York AP report states AT&T, the world's largest shareholder family, achieved record revenues of 10.997 billion and net income of 1.790 billion for the 12 months ended Nov 30, with $3.40 per share. Despite more shares outstanding, earnings per share rose from prior year. Estimated 2.6 million shareholders.

Mt Vernon police report 154 people injured in 405 traffic accidents in 1965, down from 179 injuries and 426 crashes in 1964. Police also issued 524 traffic arrests, with 220 tied to crashes, and total arrests reached 1,069. Multiple injuries included a six-car Route 460 pileup early New Year’s Day west of Mt Vernon and additional collisions on Tolle Road near Divide.
Four parked vehicles were damaged at a Mt. Vernon residence on New Year’s Day. Osie Jones reported a broken window and damaged wires at his property behind 1125 South Ninth Street. Glass broke in three cars and a truck. Owners affected include Everett Jones, Calvin Wirk, and Doris Quinn. A truck owned by Richard Stopper also had a broken window.
WOODSTOCK Ont AP A Carbondale Illinois woman Mrs David Jackson 22 was killed Sunday when the car she and her husband were driving skidded on an icy road and struck a tree. The couple resided at L109 Walk up St Carbondale
Loren Thompson, 4, of rural Centralia, died Sunday from injuries suffered Friday when struck by a vehicle as he crossed a street on Centralia Street. Police said the incident occurred while he attempted to cross.
U S paratroopers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade entered the Mekong Delta muds to probe Viet Cong strongholds near Bao Trai and the Plain of Reeds. Initial clashes yielded 111 Viet Cong killed and 502 suspects detained while Vietnamese reports claim 125 enemy dead. Air strikes and tanks supported operations but the VC withdrew deeper into swampy terrain toward the Plain of Reeds.
