Mt. Vernon utility officials plan a 20 percent water rate reduction over two years starting May 1, 1969, with a second 10 percent cut in May 1970. City Manager Chester Lewis cited rising revenues from 200 new customers, a nonuse of a reduced summer rate in 1968, and new service charges as justifications.
American deaths drop to a 10 week low during Christmas week while South Vietnamese losses hit a 13 week high. In Saigon the tolls reflect continued cease fire fragility as 2,135 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese are reported killed and renewed shelling follows the New Year.
A lone Greek gunman hijacked an Olympic Airways DC6 after takeoff from Crete bound for Athens. The plane landed at Cairo airport where 97 passengers and 5 crew were given accommodation. The hijacker was taken into custody. passengers to be returned by Ioannis Georgakis. The airline is owned by Aristotle Onassis who interrupted a New Year holiday to fly to Athens.
Jefferson county awaits its first 1969 birth. A daughter born to Mr and Mrs Dale Nunnery of Belleville at 4 05 p m Tuesday will trigger gifts from local merchants. No other births reported. winners must be Jefferson county residents and the birth must occur there. Local groups plan gifts for the first baby of 1969 in Mt Vernon and Jefferson county.
Illinois drivers face a sweeping overhaul. The minimum permit age rises from 16 to 18, with 16 and 17 required to complete an approved driver education course for licenses. Under 21 must have parental consent unless married, and consent can be revoked. Curfew laws apply to under 18 drivers and licenses can be revoked for violations. Reexaminations occur every nine years, beginning with those with prior revocations or impairments, with a yearly 1/9 renewal load. The program includes vision and traffic laws tests, and sometimes behind the wheel tests. A separate motorcycle license is required, and the license fee increases to 8 dollars with 4 dollars to driver education. Duplicates now cost 3 dollars. The secretary of state will suspend licenses for noncompliance and the process will roll out slowly over several years.
A mother Pauline Alsip, 23, and her three year old son perished in a blaze that consumed the home of Paul Alsip, 27, southeast of Pittsburg in Williamson County. Alsip escaped with burns and was hospitalized in Marion in fair condition. Coroner Jim Wilson confirmed the deaths.
President elect Nixon may receive a major pay raise before taking office on January 20. Spiro Agnew and the House speaker could also see increases as leaders plan to start legislation next week with the House first. A federal pay study had urged boosts for top officials and judges, with Nixon and others possibly included. The plan proposes raising the president’s pay from 100000 to 150000 annually starting January 20, along with higher official allowances. The commission had not jurisdiction over the president, vice president, or speaker. President Johnson has until January 18 to act on the recommendations. If approved, changes would take effect 30 days after the congressional action unless vetoed.
Santa Monica California actor Barton MacLane age 66 died Wednesday from double pneumonia. A veteran character actor with a 33 year career he played the bad guy in more than 150 films and numerous TV shows including Treasure of Sierra Madre and San Quentin.
Israeli warplanes attacked Arab positions in Jordan to silence gunfire on a patrol while saboteurs crossed from Jordan into Israel near Massarda. A Jordanian soldier was killed and five helicopters attacked, as UN condemns a Beirut raid. Insurance costs rise sharply for ships linked to Israel and Arab states.
Dr. Phil Blaiberg, the world’s longest surviving heart transplant patient, says he will visit the United States in March or April. He jokes about pneumonia amid cold weather and the Hong Kong flu while noting his Cape Town anniversary was a sunny beach day. He plans to come to New York at the end of March or early April and has set up a trust fund for Clive Haupt’s widow and mother.
Walter Huffstutler, 65, formerly head pressman, retires from The Register-News after a 43 year career beginning in the stereotype foundry in 1925. A Hamilton County native and Mt. Vernon Car Shops recruit, he and his wife Co reside at 1322 S 13th Street and plan hobby shop work and motoring.
Ralph MacLachlan, a meat cutter, killed his estranged wife and three others in Westernville New York, wounded several more, and shot himself after a police chase near Remsen. The double family tragedy and ensuing gun battle left multiple victims in critical condition and a manhunt underway.
Mt Vernon city council plans Kenneth Setzekorn longtime city engineer to serve as interim city manager until a full time replacement is hired. The first meeting of the new year is at 7 30 p m with a search for a successor to Chester Lewis who resigned January 15 and joined First National Bank as VP for new business and industry.
