Five Hour Cape Town Heart Transplant Performed
Dr Christian Barnard and a surgical team at Groote Schuur Hospital completed a five hour operation replacing a 58 year old Cape Town dentist's heart with that of a man who collapsed on a beach and died. The patient, Dr Philip Blaiberg, was conscious and described as very good. The donor was Clive Haupt, 24, a mulatto man who died after a collapse on a nearby beach. Blaiberg's blood type was rare, B positive, making donor matching difficult. The procedure began at 11 am and ended about 4 pm, and the transplanted heart began beating on its own. This follows the world’s first human heart transplant in December, when Louis Washkansky received a heart and survived 18 days.
