Three Children Die In Chicago Fire
In Chicago on the South Side three Butler children perished in a blaze that started when 13 year old Lenore tried to light an oil space heater with burning paper. The fire in a two story frame building at 324 West 42nd Place left Albert 4, Robert 3, and Ruth Ann 8 months dead. Lenore and four other siblings were rescued by neighbor William Rankin after their parents were away. The fire trapped the youngest indoors.

First National Bank plans fourth Mt Vernon bank
First National Bank officials announced plans to expand with a new affiliated bank, Jefferson National Bank, at 34th and Broadway in Mt Vernon. The $400,000 capitalization, land option on 9.5 acres, and drive in facilities were outlined, with cooperation expected between the parent and affiliated banks. New Year Holiday Traffic Toll Tops 259 in Illinois
Illinois highway deaths during the New Year holiday rose to at least 10 in the Chicago area and beyond with fatalities including W. Y. Dallman 91 editor emeritus of the Illinois State Register. The FAA will test a new airport information deck at Mt Vernon Airport this month to supply weather briefings and flight planning aids. Missionary Shooting Sparks New Year’s Eve Incident
Terre Haute Ind AP two Mormon missionaries on New Year’s Eve were involved in a shooting. Raymond Saunders 20 Yale Ore was shot in the back and in critical condition at St Anthony Hospital. Richard Whitaker 21 Compton Calif was arrested on a charge of shooting with intent to kill. Whitaker said he thought the gun held blanks while Saunders and friends said they were just trying to have a good time. Both men were recently assigned to Terre Haute by the Mormon Church to aid the local LDS branch.

Sky diver leaps without parachute over Arvin Calif
Rod Pack 26, a movie stuntman, leaped from a plane at 14 600 feet with no parachute and landed safely using a reserve chute held by fellow sky diver Bob Allen 25. Photographers followed and filmed the stunt from 4 000 feet below over a plowed field northwest of Hollywood.

Mt Vernon firemen found four or five small fires set inside the vacant Washing ton school at 11th and Vaught on New Year s Eve. They arrived at 7 30 p m to a grass fire and the hallway blazes were extinguished with minimal damage. City officials believe night shelterers caused the fires to keep warm. The old building has suffered repeated vandalism since closure. Firemen also responded to two other alarms during the holiday including a false alarm at 819 Casey Avenue and a car fire on Ninth and Perkins caused by a carburetor backfire with the fire out on arrival.
