Local residents and visitors from Chicago, Carbondale, Evansville, and surrounding towns scatter for the holidays. Families including the Gish, McClellan, Myers, Westbrook, LaSalle, and Strattan are noted in Mt. Vernon and nearby communities, with travel and hospital notes and Christmas events mentioned.
Mt. Vernon and rural firefighters battled a blaze at the Mt. Vernon Garment Co. at 8:19 last night. A large pile of 2400 pasteboard cartons burned on the loading dock rear area, damaging the dock and building while smoke filled the plant. Management credited firefighters for minimizing damage and protecting the main factory.
The National Production Authority ordered a 20 percent cut in civilian use of tin effective February 1. The regulation targets tin cans toothpaste tubes shaving bottle lids and other closures while allowing substitutes thinner tin coatings and other devices to stretch supply.

The Blue Bell club met December 16 at Mr and Mrs Culli Jones home for the annual Christmas party. Eleanor Jones was elected assistant secretary treasurer. Guests included Walter Norton and family of Woodstock Illinois and Ella Pettypool, who joined the club. The next meeting will be January 20 at Mrs Pettypool’s home. Also noted are Junior Women's Club caroling plans and the Presbyterian G and G class meeting with Christmas basket contributions and a white elephant exchange.
Tom Scrivner of route 7 and Susie Carroll of south 13th street wed November 27 at the bride’s sister Mrs. Tom Burgess home 104 Castleton Avenue. Attendants Mrs. Mildred Harvey and Mrs. Opal Austin. The ceremony was read by Otto Henson of Flora, the bride’s brother in law.
Mr and Mrs Myrle Jennings entertained members of their pinochle club last evening High score winners were Gene Brand and Mrs Jennings Robert Lipps also won a prize Refreshments were served by the hostess at the close of the meeting.
Thirty three friends and relatives gathered at 1716 Cherry street on Sunday to mark Annie Mannen's 78th birthday. A 15 foot table showcased a large birthday cake by Mrs. Charles Edwards, presented by her children Iva Walter and Merle. Out of town guests included Merle Mannen, Rockford. Olin Hester and sons Jim and Tom. Dr. J. W. Wells and daughter Helen of Waltonville. and Mrs. James Elliott of Effingham. Many gifts were received.
The Church of the Nazarene at 11th and Perkins Avenue hosts a Christmas program titled Following the Star performed by young people on Thursday at 7 30 pm. The public is invited to attend. Thimble Club members held a Christmas party at Mrs J M Cummings 405 Harrison Avenue with gifts awarded to several members and Mrs Pauline Wielt as Santa Claus.

Mr and Mrs James Elliston of south 10th street and the Waltonville road welcomed a son at Jefferson Memorial hospital at 2 27 p m yesterday. Richard Lee weighed eight pounds 11 ounces. A son was born to Mr and Mrs Johnny Owens at 3 50 p m yesterday at their home 1705 south 1st street. The ten pound boy was named Johnayne.

Pleasant Grove Women’s Society of Christian Service will meet Thursday evening December 21 at 7 30 at Mrs Earl Smith home for a Christmas exchange. Past Noble Grand club of Varnell Rebekah Lodge No 296 met December 18 at 7 30 at I C C F Temple.
The Wesleyan Service Guild of Epworth Methodist church met December 18 with opening singing and prayer. Doris Atkinson read Psalm 46, Mary Catherine Bufkin led the lesson Spiritual Resources for Health, and the group discussed God’s will for health and healing. Doris Atkinson led closing prayer. a Christmas gift exchange occurred. next meeting January 29.
The Win-Some class of Logan Street Baptist hosted the Friendship class on December 14 at 1917 Lake Street. Activities included games, mystery pals, gifts, a devotional by Mrs. Aline Jones, and Christmas singing by several members. The Loyal Women's class of Central Church of Christ will meet Thursday at 2 pm at 412 South 21st Street for a Christmas program.
Fire Chief Paul Partridge commends Illinois Cities Water Co for maintaining high water pressure during Sunday's blaze on the Mt. Vernon public square. Eight pumps drew heavy flows as valves were shut in parts of the city to ensure enough supply. about 700000 gallons were used. The chief credits the 12 inch Broadway main and new hydrants installed earlier for keeping water available throughout the incident.
Mt Vernon city employees receive pre Christmas pay today with checks issued at city hall for the December 15 to 31 period. The city council moved surplus from the judgment fund to meet the payroll and aldermen approved the action. checks expected ready late this afternoon.
T E Wall was elected president of Green Hills Country Club by directors meeting at the First National Bank. G F M Ward was named vice president and Harry Williamson reelected secretary. Retiring president Clarence Brehm reported about 60000 spent or contracted for the clubhouse and golf course with similar outlays for operation. He lauded the club as a civic asset to Vernon, noting two large oil industry gatherings hosted there. Retiring directors were Basil Moss Vince Nolan William Gamber Roy Jones and Paul Fitch. New directors include Len Paul Broyles Ed Harrington J Curtis Starr Will I Lewis Jr and G F M Ward.

Mt Vernon residents urged to aid the Cassada family after a fire destroyed their five room home on Liberty Road. Fireproof clothing, furniture, kitchen items, and bedclothes are needed. Red Cross will arrange pickup via phone 2083. The Cassadas include a 13 year old boy, a 16 year old girl, and stepson Joe Burke on convalescent leave from Great Lakes Naval Hospital. his uniforms were destroyed.
Mrs. Mary Collins, 73, whose home at 1302 Westcott street burned Sunday, says she urgently needs clothing and bed coverings. She lost all furniture and only has what she wore, a Bible, and a small radio. Donations should be brought to her daughter Mrs. Harley Phillips at 1420 Westcott.
L. E. Fuller, J. P. Falbey and Bob Fellers arrived today at the local airfield after flying in from Toledo Ohio.

A Benton High School star athlete who graduated in 1947, he is survived by his mother Mrs Ella Mortimer and four sisters Colleen Sullivan Evelyn Stines Mildred Olshe ski Pauline Wright. Funeral services will be held in Benton.
Amvets will observe White Clover Day this Saturday December 23 in Mt Vernon. Turner Boehm Post No 4 sponsors the event with commander Wayne Highsmith announcing the date and the clover being the Amvets chosen flower for veterans rehabilitation. Proceeds from clover sales aid local veterans and Marion Veterans Hospital. Clovers will be sold downtown by Amvets Post and Auxiliary.
