In Pont Saint Esprit, France, Ergot poisoned bread killed four and sickened about 40 in mid August. Police traced flour to a local mill and suspect illegally sold grain from farmers to dodge taxes as the source. 37 remained in hospital.
Washington reports a Food and Drug Administration official says careful screening of cereal grains in American mills protects against the deadly ergot fungus. He notes ergot poisoning caused France deaths this month, butUS outbreaks are rare. ergot is removed by screening as supplies for medical use are largely imported from Europe. A drug from ergot helps control bleeding.
The Jefferson County Tuberculosis Care and Treatment Fund office in the county courthouse will operate Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays starting September. Mrs. June Oakes the county health nurse has an office there and may be reached at 4095. Nineteen County patients are in sanitariums in Springfield Edwardsville St Louis and Mt Vernon. Seven patients discharged are on home treatment. X rays and skin tests have been funded by the Christmas Seal fund. Board members include Frank A. Harlow president Dr Andy Hall medical director M L Henderson and Mrs Esther Firebaugh secretary.
Associated Press reports President Truman has invoked the Taft Hartley Act emergency provisions for the ninth time, including actions during the copper strike. Lewis.
A rural fire department responded to a transformer fire at Noah Moore's Ashley road home. En route, at 17th and Broadway, a car driven by Charles Ilbery Jr struck the fire truck. Damage included the truck’s left front door and the car's bumper grill and left fender.

He noted rising personal income from 95B in 1941 to 249B in 1951, contrasted with the federal budget growth and rising cost of living, and warned inflation cannot be stopped though disaster may be distant. He explained Fed credit control and noted guests and next week’s Ladies Night at Hotel Emmerson.
A 1940 model automobile parked in the 100 block of south Fifth Street was heavily damaged by fire at 10 50 last night. Firemen said the car, owned by Harry Shelton, caught fire from leaking gasoline.

A billfold with money found by 11 year old Ruth Ann Rightnowar on Opdyke Road was turned in to the sheriff. Mrs. Ruth Rightnowar brought it to the sheriff's office and asked for the owner to be located so the money can be returned.
Wayne Scranton and Edward Thompson flew to Springfield today while Earl Outland traveled to Indianapolis, Ind., today.
Keithsburg Illinois August 31 search crews resumed dragging the Mississippi for the body of 42 year old William F Sprengnether Jr of St. Louis founder of Sprengnether Instrument Co the world’s only seismograph maker. He and his 12 year old son swam when the boy hit a hole and called for help. Sprengnether disappeared while pushing the boy to shore. Mrs Sprengnether rescued the child.
