Roman J Kabat Scheller 76 retired mail carrier and store clerk died at Nature Trail Nursing Home He was born August 7, 1900 in Perry County married Gertrude Trader October 24 1922 survived by wife son Raymond Kabat daughters Mildred Webber and Marcella Corley seven grandchildren and one great grandchild two brothers Frank and Nick and sister Celia Pestka Funeral at St Barbara Catholic Church Scheller with burial in church cemetery Rosary tonight at Fry Funeral Home Waltonville He was a member of St Barbara Church and Knights of Columbus Mt Vernon Funeral home details indicate services Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Four Centralians Arrested For Vandalizing Patrol Car

Four youths were arrested Sunday night after allegedly vandalizing a county sheriff patrol car. Deputies said patrol car 776 on Grand Prairie road north of Dix Irvington Road had its red light broken, globe blown off, and its Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network antenna bent and destroyed. They were lodged in county jail and released at 12:40 a.m. today to await charges.

Bicycle Thieves Have Busy Weekend

Five bicycles were reported stolen in the city over the weekend. Victims include Robert Kennedy in Wis with a 20 inch yellow boy’s bike and a 20 inch blue girl’s bike, Don Wilkins who lost a yellow Schwinn ten speed and a baseball glove, Mrs Ren Crabtree who reported a bike theft from her yard, and Mrs Pat Schulte who said a white Penny’s moto cross dragster with red and blue stars and value of $100 was taken from her garage Friday.

Illinois Student Pilot Hurt In Wisconsin Plane Crash

Two people were injured when a light plane crashed during an attempted landing at Dodgeville WI airport. Student pilot William Heiss 1 of Grand Junction CO and instructor John Breek 21 of Downers Grove IL were treated at a local hospital. Heiss's father Daniel was not injured.

Boat stolen at Rend Lake marina found near Vienna

John Gatson of Rantoul reported his 16 foot Roughneck bass boat and trailer left at Rend Lake marina after wheel trouble. The 145 horsepower Evinrude motor and depth finder were missing and the rig was towed away. The boat reappeared at 9:25 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 24 near Vienna.

Vandals Hit Mt Vernon City Over Weekend

Five vandalism incidents were reported to Mt Vernon police over the weekend. A brick shattered a windshield on a car at 8th and Broadway early Sunday. Another window was damaged at a home on 707 S 17th St. A BB pellet damage occurred at Parkview Trailer Court. A tire was slashed on Forest Ave. Apples overturned at 111342 S 10th St. A rock was broken off a gas pump at the city garage. Victims were urged to seek charges where applicable.

Mt Vernon youth hospitalized after Sunday fight

Good Samaritan Hospital reported a 15 year old Mt Vernon boy admitted for observation after a fight with another local youth. Police said the incident occurred Saturday at 7:14 p.m. in the 900 block of Cleveland Street. The boy sustained a possible concussion from being kicked in the head.

Cornmelon Festival Recap From Local Leaders

Jaycees provided refreshments and numerous clubs including Lions Kiwanis Optimists Rotary and B & PW backed the fifth annual Cornmelon Festival. General Chairman Mike Coffey and Festival founder Bill Steffy led planning with Mrs Carole Thompson and Mrs Martha Roberts aiding. Illinois teacher strike called off in Collinsville

Supt. Jack Renfro cancelled the strike after teachers voted Sunday to strike over pay seniority and benefits. He said none of the district 400 teachers attended a half day workshop. Across Illinois 100 teachers were out in Vandalia and 120 in Harrisburg per the Illinois Education Association spokesman.
