Sophia Hall Dies at 81 in Mount Vernon

Mrs. Sophia Hall aged 81 years eight months three days died Saturday night at her daughter’s home in Mt. Vernon. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 PM at Myers Chapel, Rev. Clyde Waddell officiating, burial Bethel Memorial cemetery. Born December 92 1869 in Kaskaskia Illinois to Chris and Harriett Tenting. Survived by three sons Wade William, Lawrence of Mt. Vernon and Rollie of Du Quoin, one daughter Mrs. C A Smith, three sisters Iva Gertie Ferlie, 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Theft Reported of Bulova Wrist Watch

Charles Emmons of 511 Bell Street reported to police headquarters Saturday afternoon that his 17 jewel Bulova wrist watch was stolen.

MacFadden’s 83rd Birthday Parachute Jump

Bernarr Macfadden, health publisher and octogenarian, leapt 2000 feet into the Hudson River on his 83rd birthday to prove aging is a habit and to inspire paratroopers. A gust sent him toward cliffs, he narrowly avoided trees, and rescuers pulled him from the water near Alpine New Jersey. He joked he feels 25 and plans to jump Niagara Falls next year.

Suit Filed Here After Car Truck Collision

A circuit court suit, filed Saturday, stems from a April 9 truck car crash at Ninth and Maple streets. Clifton Carp sues Orpha Rector and Junior Sigworth for 550 dollars for truck damages. The 1940 panel truck driven by Carp collided with Rector’s car driven by Sigworth. Craig and Craig represents the plaintiff.

Motorcycle Car Crash Injures Rider Edward Higginson

Edward V. Higginson, 28, of Mt. Vernon rural route suffered bruises and abrasions when his motorcycle hit a car at 19th and Broadway on Saturday. Glenn Rough, 1929 Casey Avenue, drove the car. Higginson was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and attendants said he would be released today.

Fined Here After Auto Collision

Brownlow Porter of 611 South 11th Street was arrested by city police Saturday night after a collision at Tenth and Perkins. Porter was fined 105.40 dollars for reckless driving and 14 dollars for lacking a driver’s license by W. O. Page in police court. Porter’s car collided with James L. Adams of RFD 7 Mt. Vernon, Adams’ vehicle having stopped at a stop sign.

Soldier From McLeansboro Back From War Zone

The Marine Phoenix transport arrives in Seattle with 2,849 rotation troops from the Korean war zone. It is the 22nd Navy transport returning to Seattle with rotation combat troops, bringing total returned to 32,436. Among passengers are Illinois residents Jimmie Hall and William Bobbie L. of McLeansboro and Clay City respectively.

Honor Editor, 81. At Du Quoin Fair

Richard W. Jones, 85 year old editor and publisher of the Johnston City Progress, was honored as the oldest living southern Illinois newspaper editor during Editor's Day at the 1951 Du Quoin State Fair. More than 165 editors and wives attended as Jones received a sterling silver lifetime pass inscribed by the fair.

Wounded Man Leaves Hospital in Mt Vernon Shooting

Marvin Huddleston aged 31 and three others wounded in a Slapout neighborhood shooting northeast of Mt. Vernon on August 15 have been discharged from Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Huddleston and two others were shot by his brother in law Onis Turner. Alex Crews Turner’s father in law was also brought to the hospital.

Ronnie Turner 23 involved in a family shooting incident with his father-in-law. The two year-old son was discharged from hospital earlier. Turner is reported in custody in Salem.
