Illinois Miners Seek Arbitration

The Illinois United Mine Workers president says strike settlement is stalled as he cannot reach Kenneth Dawes of the Illinois Coal Operators Association to resolve holiday pay provisions. About 7,000 miners are off work across roughly 25 Illinois mines, with the walkout sparked by holiday pay interpretations from an arbitration panel.

Mt Vernon School Board hires 24 for Title VII program

The Mt Vernon City School board approved 24 new hires including seven teachers seven teachers aides six teacher clerks two Title tutors and two food service workers. The $288000 grant aims to create 28 local jobs and support math and reading skills for minority students.

Parade judges named for Sweetcorn-Watermelon float event

Parade Chair man Bob Poisall announced the judge lineup for float categories. Jim Tucker receives the Presidents Award, Roger Webb the Mayor's Trophy, Robert Hawn the County Board Trophy, Clarence Bonifacious the Shrine Trophy, Harry Stamper handles the Church of Religious Theme with Rev. Summersville School board meets at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the library to discuss hiring a part time secretary and approving a student from outside the district.

Roxanna Teachers Plan Strike on First Day of Classes

In Roxanna Illinois the 135 members of the Roxanna Education Association voted to strike if no contract is reached, representing 83 percent of the district's 162 teachers across elementary, junior high and high schools. Disputes include wages seniority revisions and binding arbitration.

Sweetcorn-Watermelon Festival Parade line set for 91 entries

Parade chairman Bob Poisall and starter Chester Connaway announced a 1:30 p.m. Saturday start for 91 entries. The route runs 7th Street from Mt. Vernon High School to Main Street, east to 10th Street, south to Newby, past Park Plaza, back to Shawnee Street and the high school area. Candy may not be thrown from vehicles, but treats may be handed to curbside children.

Mt Vernon board to rent gyms for county basketball

Mt Vernon City Schools board approves renting Horace Mann and Andy Hall gymnasiums to the Rotary Club for a winter county wide basketball program on Saturday mornings. Two leagues are planned for fifth to eighth graders with a coachs draft and a basketball clinic, Oct to Jan with potential post season. Rent is 40 dollars per gym for four hours, possibly 45 for both with one custodian.
