Thompson Campaign Attacks Federal Welfare Control In Benton
Republican gubernatorial candidate James Thompson told Benton residents that federal officials control Illinois welfare programs, noting the feds pay half of a $2 billion welfare budget while writing all the rules. He addressed welfare abuses costing about $200 million yearly and pledged to meet with welfare workers to boost morale. He opened with coal mine outreach at Old Ben No. 24 as miners faced strike-related idling. He hesitated on a coal severance tax, preferring evidence it wouldn’t hurt competitive mines.
