Death of Ben S. Martin at 73 in St Louis hospital
Benjjamin S. Martin a carpenter and longtime Mt. Vernon resident died of a heart attack at Barnes Hospital St. Louis at 9:15 this morning after injuries from a ladder fall last week. He was born March 6, 1886 in Golden Gate Illinois. Survived by wife Nancy Smith and children Owen Bennie Bailey Bernice Jamison, a brother, two sisters, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral arrangements were set with Myers Chapel.

PERUQUE MO A 17 year old youth learning to swim removed his life jacket and fought his friend as he struggled in the Mississippi near Two Branch Island. David Hollenbeck son of C Fred Hollenbeck refused aid, battled 18 year old Larry Matejka who then tried to throw him a life jacket but he disappeared beneath the water. The body was recovered about five hours later.
