Porchlight Drive Aims To Aid Infantile Paralysis Fight

Dale Andrews, chair of the Jefferson County Chapter National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis, announced an Emergency March of Dimes porchlight drive in Mt. Vernon on August 26 and 27. Jaycees will assist with door to door solicitations both evenings, with mail donations also accepted. The drive uses a porch light theme and requests one dollar per family.

Girl Falls Into Excavation Behind Catholic School

Missie Arthurs a 13yearold daughter of Marybelle Arthurs of 1412 Harrison fell into an eightfoot hole behind the Catholic church while workmen excavated for the new school last night about 9 p m. She suffered a fracture between the knee and hip on the left leg and was taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital where she spent a restful night.

Five Killed In Crossing Crash Near Weverton Md

Five people died in a grade crossing collision between a Baltimore & Ohio mainline train and a car near Weverton Maryland about 50 miles northwest of Washington. The victims included Mrs. John L. Bennett aged 55 to 60, her niece Mrs. Travis A. Meredith of Welch West Virginia, and three Meredith children.

Charge Man Left Accident Scene

Harry Weaver of Wentzville Missouri is held by Jefferson county officers on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident that occurred at 1 45 p m yesterday on route 37 four and a half miles north of Mt Vernon Weaver was picked up by officers at Crossville last night He apparently sideswiped a truck driven by E W Leevy of Mt Vernon Leevy lost control and collided with a car driven by William G Anderson of Centralia The truck laden with scrap paper rolled down an embankment Leevy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for examination

Meek Urges Private Industry to Learn from Cooperatives

Joseph T. Meek Republican nominee for U.S. Senate spoke at the Egyptian Electric Cooperative annual meeting in Steeleville Randolph County urging private industry to study rural electrification cooperatives. Allen Jones sues for divorce on desertion cruelty

Allen Jones filed suit yesterday to divorce his wife Elvera Jones on charges of desertion and extreme cruelty. They were married June 29, 1943 and separated August 19, 1953. They are the parents of two children. Attorney Frank Walker represents the plaintiff.

Funeral for Stella Brewner in Champaign

Stella Brewner of Champaign age 78 died this morning at her home. Sister of S. T. Jolly of 307 Casey, she was well known in town and visits to relatives noted. Survived by husband John Brewner and one daughter, leaving Mr. Jolly as last survivor of seven children. Funeral is set for 11 a.m. Monday in Champaign.

Mrs Ida Fields Of Aden Is Dead

Mrs Ida Fields of Aden Illinois died at her home at 7 40 am. She was 64 years old. The body will be brought to Richardson Chapel in Wayne City. She was the wife of Melton Fields who survives along with four sons Woodrow of Peoria and a daughter Mrs. Mavis Hall of Aden. Also surviving are three brothers Ralph Smith of Wayne City Candy Smith of Morrisonville and John Smith and a sister Mrs Ernie Jones of Chicago. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Funeral services for Guy Vern Webber age 72 years six months and 16 days who died yesterday in Decatur Memorial hospital will be held Sunday at 2 p m at City. Rev Jack Conder will officiate and burial will be in Ten Post Oak cemetery. He was born in Wayne County February 4 1882, son of John and Jane Webber. He is survived by five sisters Alice Maxey Cora B Wilson Catherine Damltz Myrtle Bradford and Fieta Hyre. The body will be in state at the Richardson Chapel after 4 p m today.

Man dies from fumes in repair tank at factory

Garry Van Der Stadt, 37, of Peterson New Jersey, was killed by fumes while repairing a large tank at a chemical plant in Fairmont City. James Hogan, 31, of St. Louis County, entered the tank to help and was overcome. Hogan was hospitalized in East St. Louis. Lafavorite Rubber Co. workers assisted as Allied Chemical and Dye Corp. investigated the fumes’ source and composition.
