Corn-Melon Parade Acceptances Open Next Monday

Entries for the 6th Annual Sweetcorn-Watermelton Parade are due by Monday, August 22, per Parade Chairman Bob Poisall. Interested entrants should write, call, or visit the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce parade headquarters on Frontage Road, 242-5725. Parade marshal will be Chester Connaway, Co A, 3rd Battalion, 130th Infantry, Illinois National Guard, who will receive the entry list and outline the march order to be published shortly before the parade. The route runs from South 7th Street near the high school to Main Street, west to 10th Street, south to Newby, then east to 7th Street. Participants are asked not to throw candy from units. candy and prizes may be handed to spectators along the route. Recent entries include Roger Byerley with a 1930 Whippet from Byerley Farm and Home, White Swan Baptist Church with Frank Hazlip and a baptism theme for Jessie Taylor, Mt Vernon Business and Professional Women's Club via Cathy Gibson, Gary Matthews at 812 Park Ave., a Jefferson County Humane Society float by Mary Starr, Mt Vernon Assembly 71 of the Order of the Rainbow by Mabel Fulford and Bob Carter with two saddle horses and two bicycles, Wilda Sue Jackson and Mary Ann Jackson on quarter horses for Country Boutique at Markham Road and Route 15, and a Super Valu Grocery entry by March Maher.

Drought Aid Allocations Across States Revealed

President Carter signed a new Agriculture Department package delivering about 50 million dollars in drought relief to farmers in 30 states including the Midwest. Rend College Raises For Mining Instructors And Budget Revisions

Rend Lake College trustees approved a revised budget boosting faculty pay by an average 5.8 percent and granting about $3,000 extra for three mining instructors Mitchell Silkwood and Foster. Contracts span 40 to 48 weeks with on campus hours increased to 40 weekly. The board also reviewed residency rules for in-district tuition, approved an audit, and set bids for road repairs and building materials as part of fiscal year planning.

Mt Vernon Plan Commission Reviews Three Subdivisions

Mt Vernon Plan Commission will meet at city hall at 7 30 p m Thursday to review three subdivision plans for compliance with city and state ordinances. Arthur Johnson subdivision in Country Heights includes two homes on lot 146. Lowell Holloway subdivision in Summersville features seven home sites and zoned apartment area. Melvin Bayer subdivision at 27th St and Richview Rd designates five residential lots.

Rend Lake The Bend College Board of Trustees approved hiring two faculty members and three office personnel at Tuesday’s meeting. Daniel E. Mc Cowen will teach Automotive Mechanics at 12 183 for 36 weeks Norman Miller becomes Mining Instructor at 13 300 for 38 weeks Marianne Thuliler is secretary to the president at 715 monthly Lisa Lowry is secretary to the Dean of Instruction at 600 monthly and John Kretz serves as financial clerk at 6000 yearly The board also accepted resignations of instructors Bettie Griffith Jean Ann Scroggins and Jack Greer.

Dan Walker to Represent Tax Protesters

Former governor Dan Walker will lead defense for Jefferson county landowners paying property taxes in protest. Gene Wells of Waltonville said TIP hired Walker Gentle Hatcher Berz and Giamanco to represent them and that Walker will attend Mt Vernon court actions. Wells expects at least 500 protesters and urges timely tax payment delays until Sept 1 when protest forms are ready. Funds tallied about 600 dollars Tuesday and 1,000 at a courthouse meeting.
