Ice cream social by Epworth League was a financial success. Several local residents visited Mt Vernon and Belleville for fairs and church events. Ice cream social at Opdyke Baptist church planned for Saturday evening August 13.

Grover Staff and family from St Louis visit Ada Davis. Grandma Reidelberger hosts grandchildren from St Louis. Mrs Joe Beckam called to Bonnie for uncle Joe Wilson’s death. Joy Wright and friend from Benton visit Rh Ty Wright home last week. Miss Elzirha Smith of Carbondale visits relatives here. Mary Metzier and Marie Adame leave for St Louis after visiting Aunt Mrs Jake Jenkins. Junking sale last Friday well attended though stock sold slowly. Mary Loucks hosts Miss Springer of Tamaron last week. Bernard Leller returns to Carbondale after visiting relatives. Wilson will hold services at Dryden church all week. Mr and Mrs N F Hargis plan camping trip in the Ozarks. Miss Alreva Laur from near Lesser spends weekend with cousin Nina Ruth Laas. Frances Johnson visits son Mach Johnson in Waltonville.

New York August 10 Babe Ruth connected for his 42nd homer of the campaign in the third inning of the Yankees game against Chicago. The crowd roared as Ruth drove the ball over the fence, continuing his pursuit of the season marks.
National League results show Boston 4 over St Louis 3, Pittsburgh 4 over Brooklyn 2, Cincinnati 7 over Philadelphia 4, Chicago 8 over New York 7 in 10 innings. The Car Builders open a two game series at Eldorado this afternoon. After the game tomorrow they will return home and will meet the famous Belleville White Rose team here on next Saturday and Sunday. Games between these two fast clubs are always interesting and some good sport should be provided in these two games.

Mrs George Tete recovers well from cancer surgery in Mt Vernon and will return soon. Sidney Parker returns from Bana where he had been in school.

Brown of the American Relief Administration led talks with Maxim Litvinoff in Riga regarding famine relief and possible exodus of remaining Americans. Litvinoff offered that all Americans in Russia would be allowed to leave if they wished.
An instructive graduation program at the Baptist church in Woodlawn honored 60 seventh graders and 18 eighth graders from Shiloh Cosner townships and parts of Grand Prairie McClellan and Clissville. D Slater led the program with Win Miner presenting diplomas and addressing the crowd. Rev S P Hails offered invocation and benediction as Ruth Slater read with piano accompaniment. The church was crowded.
Associated Press reports that Republicans on the House Ways and Means committee agree to repeal the excess profits tax and income surcharges above 32 percent effective January 1 next, and to remove all freight and passenger transportation taxes as of next January. The committee also plans a five percentage point rise in the normal corporate tax to 15 percent.
Judge Pope was re-elected to the Duquoin city court bench by a majority of 785 votes over former State's Attorney Nelson Layman in yesterday's election, according to United Press reports from Puquoin Illinois.
