Soon after 5 a.m. today at Vanex Co. on Route 142 lightning ignited gas fumes from a vent pipe. no building damage, pipe scorched. Lightning struck Magdalene Hammer’s residence at 9517 S. 13th St. yesterday evening with no visible damage observed.

Five Thefts From Vehicles Reported Citywide
City police logged five burglarized motor vehicles yesterday and early today. Equipment from a truck at Regal 8 Inn was stolen including a red toolbox and a radar detector valued at 400. Henry Cullefer of Palmer Texas identified as owner. CB radios and accessories were stolen from autos on Cherry Street Lamar Avenue Hillcrest Drive and at a residence, with values ranging from 60 to 300. A rifle with telescopic sight was taken from a vent-window-broken car on 18th Street, value 60.

Bomb fails to go off in New York
Police say a dynamite bomb found in a crowded midtown office building was connected to a small Puerto Rico independence group. Investigators note it may have been planted with two other bombs and could have been overlooked hours earlier. Earlier blasts in midtown killed one and injured seven, driving workers into the streets. The AMAX Building had been threatened by callers claiming ties to the group.

Two Goldwater residents injured in I-57 rollover
Two people from Goldwater Midh were hospitalized after their pickup ran off I-57 five miles south of Mt. Vernon and overturned about 11:30 p.m. Gertrude Williams 55 was in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital with multiple injuries. Her husband Esta Williams 56 was in satisfactory condition. State troopers said a draft from a passing semi-trailer caused the driver Gertrude Williams to lose control and leave the road.

Four Dead In Plane Crash Upstate
Four persons killed in a DeWitt County plane crash are identified as Lake County pilot Albert Braun 43 his wife Barbara Braun 42 their grandson Jason Braun 4 and Mary Larimer 72 all of Grayslake. Civil Air Patrol found the bodies after relatives reported the family missing following a thunderstorm flight from Hillsboro to Grayslake. The single engine Piper Cherokee disappeared after radio contact near 3 p.m. and crashed about eight miles northeast of an Illinois Power Co plant near Clinton in a rough wooded area.
