Aunt Of Mt Vernon Woman Hit By Train Dies Later

Mrs. Ruth Fallon, 73, of Murphysboro, aunt of Mt. Vernon resident Mrs. Virginia Harper, died Sunday after being struck by a Gulf Mobile & Ohio freight train at a Murphysboro crossing about 2:10 p.m. Witnesses said she walked in front of the train. Burial will be in Pinckneyville City Cemetery. Survivors include a niece Mrs. R. M. White and two nephews Lyle Brown and Lt. Col. J. W. Brown. Ed­ward Fallon, her husband, died in 1961.

St. Louis Gas Main Blasted

A Laclede Gas Co supervisory employee fought to close a two inch hole in a 12 inch gas main after a blast sent gas skyward. Police believe an explosive was dropped into a five inch pipe at a valve in Sunset Hills. Investigators from St Louis County police and the FBI are cooperating.

Jackson County authorities say no charges are likely against patrolman Larry Tincher after he fatally shot 22 year old Charles F. Keller during a family dispute. Keller reportedly pointed a 38 caliber pistol at officers.

Troops Under Sniper Fire Advance in Vietnam

Units reported advancing under sniper fire with no Marine casualties. In Da Nang a Marine patrol killed three Viet Cong. Air and naval strikes hit Viet Cong targets across South and North Vietnam, destroying hundreds of buildings and antiaircraft sites. Spokesmen cited numerous missions, with 82,400 U.S. personnel in South Vietnam last Thursday.

Cattle 6,500 with steer prices 25.25 to 27.00, heifers 22.00 to 22.00, cows 13.50 to 15.50, vealers 22.00 to 25.00, calves 15.00 to 20.00. Sheep 800 with spring lambs 24.00 to 25.00, yearlings 21.3, shorn ewes 4.00 to 1.50, feeder lambs 20.00 to 22.00.

Wall Street ends mixed as airlines lead gains

The Dow Jones noon averages show gains in airlines and golds while industrials drift lower. Boeing and Douglas rose about a point, United Air Lines up half a point, Eastern up 0.3, and American and South African Gold up strongly, with GE and Du Pont easing slightly. The American Stock Exchange saw modest price advances and bonds stayed mostly unchanged.

Rev Holcomb to Study for Doctorate Leaves First Baptist Church

Reverend Eugene L. Holcomb resigned as minister of First Baptist Church Mt. Vernon after nine years to pursue a doctorate in counseling education at the University of Minnesota. He will serve until August 29 and a farewell for his family is scheduled August 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. at 1708 Briarwood. The pastor founded the Salem Road church building project and will seek a pulpit committee election on August 18 to choose a successor.

Mrs Hoit and Mrs Zachman To Receive High Awards

Two Mt Vernon Illinois Bell Telephone Co. workers, Mrs Alice Zachman and Mrs Shirley Hoit, will receive the Theodore N. Vail award at a luncheon this Wednesday. They earned citations for directing police and an ambulance to aid a Mr Vernon boy who accidentally shot himself last March after he called the switchboard for help. The Vail Award is the telephone industry’s top honor for public service, lifesaving, and protection of property.

Two frightened prowlers fled Saturday night as residents fired at them. Bill Mayo of 806 Warren reported taking a shot at a prowler. Police searched the area for any wounded intruder but found none. A woman in another neighborhood scared a window peeper away with a blank pistol.

One non-injury crash occurred at Eighth and Main in Mt. Vernon Saturday at 8 50 p m. Larry D. Jackson Route 2 Bruford and George M Warren Little Rock Ark drove the two cars. Jackson car sustained about 75 damage while the Warren auto was undamaged.

Edmund Smart reported about 50 in tools and bulldozer parts stolen Saturday from RR 4 near Elk Prairie Church. He told Sheriff Dewey Barton the items included a bulldozer exhaust pipe fuel caps grease guns and various tools.

Marines Return From Viet Nam Mission In San Diego

The first U S combat unit to land in Viet Nam for combat duty has returned to San Diego. About 1,000 Marines from the 3rd Battalion arrived Sunday after 13 months overseas. Their duties included 100 days aboard ships and four months near Da Nang air base.
