Fiancee’s valiant effort fails as man drowns in lake
A 23 year old Granite City woman tried to save her fiance from drowning in Lake Staunton on his 26th birthday Saturday. Donald Hess, also of Granite City, drowned in about 34 feet of water. Miss De lores Hastings was treated for shock and released from a Staunton hospital. An inquest returned a verdict of accidental drowning. The couple had planned to marry in October.

Man Killed by Electric Shock at Marion Fair
A concession stand operator, Al Sterner, 50, of Bradenton Florida, died after an electric charge at the William son County Fair shocked his wife Maxine and caused him to rush to aid. He apparently touched a truck charged by a faulty power line as his foot touched a tent stake, and died about 45 minutes later at Marion Memorial Hospital. Maxine Sterner was unhurt.

Springfield plant of Allis-Chalmers was struck at 12:01 am by about 3800 Local 1027 CIO United Auto Workers members.
