Columbia librarian Sharon Willis dies at 39 in Missouri

Sharon O Willis of Columbia Missouri died yesterday in a Columbia hospital. Born June 11 1938 she was a professor of library science at the University of Missouri. She held degrees from SIUC and the University of Illinois and held leadership roles in the Missouri School Library Association and Missouri Library Association.

Born March 28 1898 in Jefferson County he served in Army Medical Corps World War II. Preceded by three wives and an infant brother.

Emmett Harrington 75 of Sesser died yesterday at Franklin Hospital Benton born March 18 1902 in Michigan son of Daniel and Annie Harrington married to Sarah Ried who preceded him in death in 1974. Services held at St Marys Church Sesser with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. Frmenas may call at Brayfield Funeral Home after 6 pm today. Rosary tonight at 9:30.

New U S Department of Energy Created in 11th Year Shuffle

President Carter signed creating the Department of Energy, the first new Cabinet agency in 11 years, absorbing about 50 energy programs. The department will have 20,000 employees and a 10.6 billion dollar budget, to be led by James R. Schlesinger with operation aimed by Oct 1.

Airlift for Farm City Week set for August 9

Farmers may view their acreage from the air Tuesday August 9 during the county airlift for Farm City Week. Flights run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with half hour rides at $7 from Mt. Vernon Airgo Flight Service. Four flight areas cover northwest to southwest townships with lunch hour planes and same rotation in the afternoon.

Mitchell Museum showcases works by Sarah Capps a EKU faculty member from Belle Rive with jewelry making and metalsmithing Penny Kaplan from Larchmont NY with sculpture models and works on paper and Dale Threlkeld Belleville Community College department chair with mixed media paintings. Capps and Threlkeld have a cassette tape lecture about their works available on request along with select paintings from the Mitchell permanent collection.

Rotary Swim Meet Opens Youth Event in Mt Vernon Pool

The fifth annual Rotary Swim Meet for Jefferson County youths is set for August 20 at Mt. Vernon city park pool with events starting at 9 a.m. Registration covers all boys and girls up to 18, plus an adult division for 19 and over. Registration points at Mt. Vernon Recreation Club, city park pool, Elk's Country Club, or at the pool before 9 a.m. on race day. Trophies awarded to a boy and girl in each division. ribbons for first to third in each event.

Cemetery owner pledges support to neuter fund drive

Mt. Vernon cemetery operator Gene Wells joins county Humane Society effort to curb stray animals. For every small pet buried this year, he will donate half the cost of the plot grave digging and perpetual care to the neutering and spaying fund for owners unable to cover operations.

Illinois will switch to five year license plates starting in 1979, with renewal tags issued to existing plates. Gov. James R. McLeansboro Boy Charged In Shooting

A 13 year old from McLeansboro was charged in Hamilton County juvenile court with involuntary manslaughter in the July 13 shooting death of his ten year old cousin Ralph Woodrow Masters of Waddy Kentucky was visiting at the cousin’s home southwest of Dale The boy is held in the juvenile detention center in Edwardsville and his mother Arella McCarthy faces reckless conduct and gun permit charges.
