District meet opens under Mendell Kelley in Carmi
The first district meet under Mendell Kelley of Carmi as 13th district commander drew veterans who praised it as the largest and most enjoyable in years. Visiting dignitaries included Dick Depper Arthur Miller Joe Wuerz Lewis Brake Vernon Jones Russell Kamper Roy Hines Roy Lechner George Brozina Paul Staton and Donna Dierkies. More than 150 attended the district banquet at the I.O.O.F. Hall. Ogie Ellis led the Sunday morning session and Kelley presided at the afternoon session.

Raymond Huston Rector, a well known taxi driver, died at 7:00 this morning at Lowry Nursing Home. He was 68 years old. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Myers Chapel with Rev. Howard Fiota officiating. burial in Disney Chapel cemetery at Lola, Kentucky. He lies in state at Myers Chapel after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Born June 24, 1891, in Jefferson county, he was the son of George and Elizabeth Rector. Survived by wife Pearl Suits, two sons Cleatus and Leonard, one daughter Evelyn Conner, three brothers, one sister, 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Chauffeurs.

Baldwin and Guerrera, pilots stranded at Brady Glacier in a National monument area, were sighted near the crash site about 90 miles west of Juneau by a Canadian mining helicopter. They were flown to Tarr Inlet beach and then to Juneau Harbor by Coast Guard amphibian. Adverse winds on the overflight last Sunday caused the helicopter crash, the Coast Guard rescue center said.

Plane Down In Desert He Rafts Down Colorado
Daniel Reisman a 44 year old Salt Lake City pilot told of a four day survival ordeal after his light single engine plane forced down on an abandoned Utah airstrip. He trekked through the desert found water only a cupful and built a raft to ride the Colorado River to Glen Canyon Dam before rescue by a river guide and helicopter. He was hospitalized at Page Arizona in exhaustion and malnutrition but in good overall condition.
