Mt. Vernon hosts its annual grade school music festival at 7 30 p m Tuesday in Casey junior high gym. An all vocal program features each grade school performing two numbers and the all city chorus will close with four numbers. Rural Grocery Damaged by Fire Near Mt Vernon
The Lloyd Puckett grocery four miles southwest of Mt. Vernon on Waltonville Road suffered heavy damage to the rear store room, with stock lost to heat and smoke. Fire Chief Carl Jones said the cause was undetermined. Six other fires were reported over the weekend and Monday, including grass fires damaging lumber, railroad ties, and a fence, plus a wiring short damaging a car, and an electric iron igniting rugs and a mattress at a home.

Funeral services for Hallie E. Kniffen of Bonnie will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Bonnie Methodist church for the 42 year old man killed Saturday when his car was struck by a L. and N. train at the 13th street crossing. Coroner’s jury calls the death accidental. Kniffen, a steel fitter at Mt. Five Year Old Girl Struck By Auto Near Home
Cheryl Kay Reed five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Coy Reed of 500 south 15th street was injured shortly after noon today when she was struck by a car near her home. She was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital where attendants reported no broken bones and injuries appear not serious. City officers said the girl ran in front of a car driven by 18 year old William Ray Galiher of 417 Broadway.

Two Accidents Reported In Mt Vernon Yesterday
Two minor automobile accidents occurred in Mt Vernon yesterday with no injuries. Last weekend and May 2 3 determined ratings for thousands of Illinois high school musicians. Mt Vernon results spanned four divisions with 5 superiors 12 excellents 19 goods and 5 fairs in the State Finals AAA at University of Illinois. Superior honors went to four solos and one ensemble. Night Club Owner Shot Dead in Madison Bar
In Madison HL on April 28 an armed man killed Thaddeus R. Skeer also known as Jack Kelly at his night club while police sergeant Emmett Pazia watched. About 250 patrons fled as the killer escaped. Skeer had prior convictions for armed robbery counterfeiting and bootlegging.

Grade School Musicians Win Honor Ratings
Mt. Vernon grade school children excelled in a Herrin vocal contest last weekend. Junior high students led with first places in four events, including Carol Pilson and Tommy Johnson in solos, the girls sextet, and the boys octet which earned a Superior rating and an invitation to sing at the evening concert. Fifth and sixth graders claimed second place in four events with performers Yavonne Canter, John Reznich, and two school octets from Franklin and Edison. No third division ratings were awarded to Mt. Vernon contestants.
