High School Lab Explosion Injures Twenty-Four at Tilden
Two explosions during a chemistry demonstration at Tilden Technical High School injured 24 students and staff, none seriously. Master chemist Newell Collins led 150 pupils as burning water tricks with sodium potassium alloy sparked spills and a blast that damaged a sink and window panes near 48th Street and Union Avenue.

Convict scales water tower at Stateville demands welfare aid
Vincent Kasprcak, a Stateville prisoner jailed for robbery, climbed an 80 foot water tower in the prison yard for about ten hours. He left a note demanding a letter from the Governor guaranteeing welfare aid for his wife Wanda and their three children in Makanda. Three Die as Plane Strikes Tacoma Power Line
