Flames Kill Seven Children in Oblong Fire
Fire destroyed a two story home near Oblong Illinois, killing seven children aged 4 to 15. Fire Chief Charles Bloom said four bodies were recovered by daybreak and three others were missing. parents escaped with the house burning through the stairway after 1 am. The dead include Norman Jean 15 Carolyn 14 Harold 12 Rita 9 Barbara 7 Paul 6 and Mary 4. Bonnie, 17, was not at home. The cause was not immediately determined.

City Manager Kenneth Setze Korn said the latest low bid for paving West Broadway from Mth to 42nd Street is expected to be rejected as too high by the state highway department. Bids have been rejected twice before. Southern Illinois Asphalt Co. of Mt. Vernon bid $405,240. If rejected, another bid setting is expected this spring. The school board meanwhile approved budget revisions to cover site and construction fund needs for property purchases in the original plan as the urban renewal program was halted. The board also set a public hearing and exercised options on several properties in the area.
