Mt V Students Win Vocal Honors At Carbondale
Mt Vernon students won multiple vocal honors at the southern Illinois grade school contest in Carbondale. Junior soloist Tommy Johnson earned first superior, Delores Collens first division, ensembles and trios secured first or second division ratings, and several Mt Vernon youths appeared in the afternoon festival with 16 in the boys chorus, 28 in the senior chorus, and 34 in the junior chorus.

A 1000 unit housing project for Air Force personnel at Scott Air Force Base will start within three months. Bechtel Utah Hopkins and Co Dallas will build and operate the $8 million complex, housing about 4500 people. Completion is targeted in about 15 months, authorized by the 81st Congress.

Lt. Roger F. Shurtz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shurtz of Waltonville, is assigned as an electronic officer with the Seventh Fleet Service Group. He will be stationed at Subic Bay in the Philippines for two years. Shurtz served in the Pacific during World War II and rose from chief electrician to Ensign, then Lieutenant JG after decommissioning his ship in 1946, later completing training in Washington, D. C. and the Great Lakes Naval Training School before his full promotion to Lieutenant. His wife Helen Bates Shurtz and their children expect to join him when passage is available.
