Ed Dirks attends itinerary Federation Retail Associations annual meeting at Abraham Lincoln Hotel Springfield. Numerous residents visit Mt. Vernon for business and personal reasons. Local figures travel to Centralia Evansville Vandalia Bowie Marion Jacksonville Norris City and Reel Foot Lake for meetings weddings and family visits.
The April Field School PTA meeting featured student performances directed by Lena Cross, including solos by Sharon Hillard and Joyce Bullock and a group chorus. Other items included a skit by Mrs. Smith’s room, a reading, and officer reports. spring roundup announced for May 12.

Mt Vernon Lodge No. 31 A F and A M schedules a Friday April 22 meeting at 7 30 PM to practice for dedication ceremonies and urges all officers to attend. Co W Peckenpaugh, secretary notes a Saturday April 23 gathering at 1 30 PM to conduct the funeral of John A. Dycus at the temple.
Horace Mann P T A met in the school auditorium to discuss Better Ways of Growing Up. Mrs Glenn Kotter presided as president with third grade pupils performing Children of Health land and fourth graders singing The Flag and Spring. Keith Thompson read Tommy Roder and the Cats, and the feature film Under Southern Skies was shown by Principal Charles Inskeep. Attendance awards went to the third grade rooms. Refreshments followed a social hour. the program committee included Mrs Herbert Carpenter Mrs James Easley Mrs James Walker and Miss Naomi Bogan.
The Jefferson County Council of Parents and Teachers elected officers for the coming year. President Mrs G F Dougherty Bluford. vice president Mrs W H Cullins Bethel. secretary Mrs W F Hicks Pleasant Grove. treasurer Mrs Lee Boswell Summersville. Representatives from Bethel Old Union Summersville Bluford and Pleasant Grove attended. A nurse project plan was discussed and refreshments were served. Next meeting September 6 at West Salem school. All units invited.
Miss Martha Jane Threlkeld of this city will wed Major Richard Lewis Long of Mishawaka Indiana. Threlkeld, a DePauw alumna and Pi Beta Phi member, works at Wright Patterson AFB Dayton. Long, a Purdue graduate, is an Army Field Forces liaison officer stationed at Wright Patterson. Wedding planned June 4 at the Base Chapel Wright Patterson AFB.
The 23rd District annual meeting at First Baptist church in this city drew 172 members. Officers elected: president Mrs Paul Norris Robinson Ill second vice president Mrs W M Rehnquist Carmel, treasurer Mrs R L Stonesham Lawrenceville. Mrs Silas Echols urged varied paths to education and outlined seven marks of an educated woman. Memorial service for deceased members included readings and music.
The Summersville Parent-Teacher Association will meet at the school on Tuesday evening April 26 at 7 30 with new officers to be installed. The program will be presented by parents. Miss Barbara J Whitney of Mt Vernon will join the Seventh Annual Middlebury College Conference arrangements as student committee member for the event to be held in Middlebury Vermont April 23 and 24. The Junior Chair at the First Presbyterian church will rehearse Saturday at 10 30 a m with Mrs O P Gilbert in charge. Lincoln P T A held a Thursday afternoon meeting in the school assembly room with students from the first three grades presenting The Boy and the Three Billy Goats and fourth graders Kept In plus Little Orphan Annie. The president Mrs David Ames conducted business and brief talks by Mrs Frank Reynolds and J Frank Hughey followed. Plans for the Summer Round-up were announced with Mrs Paul Trees as chair. Attendance awards went to Miss Lida Stevens upper grades and Miss Dorothy Daly lower grades.

The Singing Illini from the University of Illinois perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday April 26 in Mt Vernon high school's auditorium. They will include Mt Vernon Loyalty in tribute to the state basketball champions. Sponsored by Mt Vernon Moose Lodge this is the first of two city concerts. They will also appear at a student assembly Wednesday morning. The 70 singers are directed by W. J. Hoel who led the 70th Infantry Division band overseas and helped at Patton’s Heidelberg funeral. Hoel, a Tuscola native, earned a BA in 1942 and an MS in 1947 after four years in the Army as Chief Warrant Officer.
