The Bathyscaphe Trieste, operated by the Office of Naval Research, has logged scores of dives since entering service in December. In 1960 it reached 35,700 feet in the Mariana Trench near Guan Island using a different gondola, with a 58 feet overall length and an 11 feet hull diameter. Springfield Ill A bill by Rep Gale Williams R Carbondale to grant property tax exemptions for residents 65 or older passed the Illinois House 96 to 39 and moves to the Senate. The measure would exempt 5000 on homesteads and 1000 on personal property with an estimated 35 million annual cost to local governments. Six Accidents In Mt V Area Injure Baby
Tonya Anderson of Mt Vernon suffered a broken left arm Friday in a crash on state route 148 southwest of Mt Vernon. The infant was reported to be doing well at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mary Ann Cravens of Herrin drove the car that overturned with Tonya aboard. Five other Mt Vernon area crashes occurred Friday including a three car collision on Salem Road with Euterpe Hanna Norman L. Fairchild and Elizabeth S. Brown. Hanna was fined $5 and costs for speeding. Other collisions involved Allene Fry Berlie Morgan Floyd Remsberg Willard Bell and Thomas A Orr with Mable Hoffner.
