Harley Hayes 59 died in Danville Illinois after a long illness. A Mt. Vernon native andWorld War I veteran, he worked in the Mt. Vernon Car Company wood department. His body will be returned to Mt. Vernon for funeral services and burial. He leaves a son William of Mt. Vernon, two daughters Cecile Creek and Venita Moore, two brothers Olin and Thomas Hayes, and two sisters Ruth Smith and Opal Huston.
Senator Watkins regards McCarthy tax refund as irrelevant to allegations of improper conduct. McCarthy presented the check to assert financial honesty and accused Watkins committees of dishonesty. A Senate subcommittee previously urged censure and Watkins said no apologies are owed to McCarthy or the Senate.
Salem voters reject the city manager plan by 3,634 to 2,974. East Peoria Ray Allison re-elected mayor 2,316 to 2,099 over Hen ry Reichelderfer. Grayville Ray Koehler elected mayor 540 to 233 over Ralph Alcorn, and Helen Werzner chosen Grayville's first woman commissioner. Daylight saving time defeated in Rock Island and several cities. Rock Island also defeated a fluoridation proposal. Beald White Hall Carlinville Canton Palmyra Carrollton and others approved daylight time. Jerseyville approved daylight time in an incomplete tally.
Public notice lists meetings on April 21 22 and 23 including a trustee appointment at Atkinson Cemetery and related fraternal events. Ralph Brookman and George H Ogietree are named with officers and dates. Effie Marlow and Thelma Shehorn sign as C M and Scribe.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Dale of Lowery announce the birth of a seven pound seven ounce son named Michael Dale at 3 11 p m Tuesday in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs James Darnell of Benton announce a son born at 5 40 p m Tuesday in Good Samaritan Hospital weighing six pounds one ounce.
Pittsburgh scientist Dr Jonas E Salk developer of the polio vaccine says contributions sent to him will be deposited in a trust and not used personally. Funds likely to support preventive medicine efforts and will be disposed after review and consultation. He notes he is not soliciting funds and has not authorized others to do so. Since the vaccine's reported effectiveness 80 to 90 percent, about 10000 messages have reached him at the University of Pittsburgh.
A major city aid bill to divert one fourth of Illinois sales tax receipts to municipalities for fire police and public health was killed after an eight to thirteen vote. Rep Joe Stremlau had sponsored the measure and then proposed reducing the diversion to one eighth but it failed to advance.
Princeton Hospital and Montefiore Hospital clashed over Einstein brain study rights. Officials said the brain would stay in town, while Montefiore indicated it would be moved there for examination and dissection, a misunderstanding that left experts unsure about the brain’s location.
Louis Jackstadt defeats Pekin Norman Wolfer by 2950 to 2592 to win. Mayor John McGinty presides as council reorganizes at May meeting. Ansorge replaces retiring Miles Talbott, who did not seek reelection. Wood and Ansorge win four year terms. Coyn Mateer and Howard Campbell have two years remaining.
Everett H. Smith, 59, owner of Public Ice Service Co., drowned Tuesday in the firm’s concrete-enclosed reservoir in Anna. He fell through a three-foot opening in the roof to water seven feet below, clung to a pipe, and disappeared. His body was recovered in eight feet of water after his family reported him missing at noon.
Mt Vernon GM Club promoted E. J. Curry to assistant manager of the St Louis GMAC control branch. James Hendren will become credit supervisor in St Louis. Knox Reed of Alton will lead the Mt Vernon office. The meeting included dealers from surrounding counties and a pledge toward a new UAW CIO agreement.
A memory expert entertained 100 Knife and Fork Club members in Pratt Kansas by recalling first and last names of all he had met at a recent dinner. The following Tuesday George Bailey, the club secretary, wrote that he had forgotten his hat and could not recall whether he left it at the hotel or the auditorium.
In Volos Greece a major quake left one dead 49 injured and 80 percent of buildings damaged up to 500 demolished. Police logged 23 tremors in 24 hours as heavy rains drove thousands to streets in a port city 100 miles northwest of Athens.
A small caliber artillery shell dropped by a Marine in a mess line exploded injuring 33 enlisted men at Camp Pendleton California. The shell was a dud picked up on the firing range as a souvenir and shown to comrades before it exploded. Pvt. Dorman T. Swann of Winnsboro Texas was in critical condition.

A Jefferson county delegation will attend the Young Democrats of Illinois executive committee meeting at the St. Nicholas Hotel in Springfield at 2 00 p m Sunday April 24. State secretary Rolland F Tipsword extended an invitation to all interested Young Democrats to attend as they plan laws for the 1956 campaign. Linus F. Kiefer of Belle Rive Jefferson County was reelected chairman of the State Advisory Committee of the Farmers Home Administration of Illinois for 1955. Harold H. Schweitzer was elected vice president. The five member committee also includes Charles J. Elliott Glenn J. Coles C Oral Danial and Dr William G Kammiade as ex officio member. The group met in Champaign to review the Illinois FHA program including drought emergency credits and soil and water loans designed to aid farmers in adopting better practices.
