Route 161 will close to through traffic from Centralia toward Mt. Vernon starting Monday for seven months to reconstruct the highway to modern standards. Completion is expected by November 15, weather permitting. Detours will route motorists via Salem and Sandoval through U.S. 51, U.S. 50, and I-57. two locations near Centralia at Raccoon Creek bridges and four miles east will be fully closed at times.
