State and local police arrested 23 people in two Cairo raids on Saturday night seizing slot machines dice cards and currency. Nine slot machines and equipment were taken from the Elks Club while 22 others were arrested at a private residence with Lonnie Brown 64 charged with keeping a gambling place. Police recovered dice horns and money with two arrests for carrying pistols illegally. An $80 theft from a jukebox occurred at the Brown residence during booking.

A five year old Mt Vernon girl was listed in good condition at Cardinal Glennon Hospital after being struck by a car Saturday in the 1400 block of South 10th Street. Gail Gordon, 1513 South 9th Street, darted into the path of Kenneth Kirkpatrick, 44, of 2716 Logan Street, whose car hit her at 12 05 p m. The girl was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital and then transferred to the St Louis hospital.

Vienna Correctional Center inmates began ambulance service for Johnson and Pope counties. Twelve inmates and five others have completed the 12 hour EMT ambulance course, with 44 more in training. The EMTA program supports the state trauma system and will staff the service 24 hours daily.
