Washington AP reports AFL-CIO President Joseph A Beirne says a nationwide strike by about 200 000 telephone workers is likely next Thursday after a seven hour meeting with the unions executive board Beirne says the board supports pressing for a substantial general wage increase. About 8 000 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers members are already on strike at New Jersey Bell and 14 000 Beirne union members are respecting picket lines. The New Jersey Bell says operations continue with no service interruption. A Thursday 3 pm strike deadline would affect 23 000 telephone installers.
