Mt Vernon area residents host family and friends over the Easter weekend. Nos. include Elmer Bernhard of Robinson and Jack Letzekorn of St. Louis, with numerous guests from Beloit, Joliet, Granite City, and Carbondale visiting local households. Several locals travel to nearby cities for gatherings and church events.
Seven thousand Railway Express clerks and freight handlers in the metro area voted to end their five week work stoppage and return to work Monday. About 3,000 drivers idled in the dispute will be affected. The ballot was binding on all 7,000 workers and was declared unanimous by Daniel J. Sullivan of the AFL Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks. About 3,200 union members attended the meeting.
The Bluford P T A will meet Monday at 2 15 PM in the school auditorium with Mrs C W Martin as speaker on Allowance for Growth Music by seventh and eighth graders and the P T A chorus Officers will be installed. Other items note Hopper Homemakers Club April 14 birthday cake for four April celebrants and prizes. next meeting at Verneita Wangler's May 12. College School P T A closes the year with oyster and chili supper and officer installations. special songs and readings follow. 4 H Clubs report Go-Getters and Wiener roast plans. Gleaner's Class invites former members with quilt blocks to call or contact a member.
Rebekah Lodge No. 296 met in regular session Thursday at 7:30 in the I O O F Hall. Thelma Shehorn reported on the District meeting in Centralia April 2. Edith Hayward Williamson of Loveland Colorado attended and spoke. A playlet Fat and Lean by Donald Mays featured the fat and thin roles. Linda Burge performed baton twirling, and a cake walk was held.
Harmony Home Bureau Unit met April 13 at Mary Myers home. Mrs Myers led a major lesson on Top of the Stove Cookery and Crystal Sumner gave a minor lesson on Poison Ivy. A meeting change was noted for Betty McDonald’s home on May 20. Courtesy Club gathered at Mrs Hermenia Faulkner’s home on South 18th Street for a covered dish luncheon and games with prizes awarded to winners. Guests included Nora Webb Zelma Townsend Ruth Faulkner Hazel Estes Paul Capps Dexter Kelley Ina Puckett Goldie Faulkner. The May 19 meeting was at Pansy McElwain’s home.

Mr and Mrs Max Williams of Waltonville announce a seven pound seven ounce son born this morning at Good Samaritan hospital named Max Alan. Mr and Mrs Raymond Legg of 902 South 26th Street welcome a daughter born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital weighing seven pounds five ounces named Susan Raeleen.
Patton Commandery invites all Sir Knights to Easter Sunrise Services at the high School Auditorium. Meet at the high school at 6 45 a m sharp. After services Sir Knights and ladies will attend a Master breakfast in the Masonic Temple. Wear uniform if possible. Glenn E Cole Corn 4 16.
The Illinois Department of Insurance announced a statewide exam plan led by Director Harry B. Hershey. The first exams begin April 25 in Chicago for Cook and Lake county residents, with May tests downstate including May 19 at Mt Vernon for Hamilton, Perry, White, Jefferson and Washington counties.
The Weather Bureau predicts sun for most of the country on Easter Sunday with cool mornings and freezing temperatures near the Great Lakes and inland New England. Expect thirties to forties inland, milder afternoon along the Atlantic seaboard, and mostly sunny but cooler conditions from the Mississippi to the plains and Rockies with morning fog on the Pacific coast.
Wayne City Ill April 16 Funeral services will be held at Combs Chapel in Wayne City at 2:00 p.m. Sunday for Pvt Russell Thomason who was killed in action during World War II while serving his country. Burial will be in Maple Hill cemetery at Fairfield. Thomason was killed September 28 1944 in France while serving in the Infantry. He was born November 16 1913 in Wayne City the son of Roy and Ruth Trotter Thomason and was 30 years ten months and 12 days old at his death. He is survived by his mother Ruth Waller of Madison Ill two sons Jerry and Marshall and two daughters Wanda and Patsy Ann all of Granite City one brother Loren Thomason of Madison and five sisters Mrs Zelma Brown of Dale Mrs Ruby Arnold of Madison Mrs Hazel Sanders and Mrs Gladys Cook of Fairfield and Mrs Beulah McQuay of Granite City.
Construction on the State Tuberculosis Sanitarium and the Good Samaritan Hospital was shut down due to a labor dispute with the J. L. Simmons Company and the local hod carriers union. Labourers walked off yesterday demanding a signed contract, threatening to delay excavation at Franklin grade school starting Monday.
Mrs Lou Bullard of Keenes dies at her daughter’s Joliet home. Widow of R W Bullard she is survived by two sons Lester and Ernie of Keenes. Body to be taken to Combs Chapel Wayne City for funeral arrangements remain until the hour.
Mrs Esther Sledge Hardy 32 wife of Everett Hardy died at 3 15 this morning at the tuber culosis sanatorium Norton Kansas Funeral services will be held first in the Baptist church Cedar Vale Kansas where she lived The body will be brought to Mt Vernon later and burial will be in Mt Zion cemetery Jefferson county She is survived by her father W E Sledge her husband Everett Hardy one brother Loman of Denver two sisters Mrs Estalre Rankin Byron Ill and Mary Lou Sledge Mt Vernon
A taxicab owned by the Egyptian Cab Company was stolen late last night and recovered early this morning. Two youths are being held and questioned by authorities. no charges have been filed yet.
