Body Crosses Sea Three Times Burial Set

HAVERHILL Mass April 14 The body of Staff Sgt Themistocles Zombas who crossed the Atlantic three times since being killed in the Battle of the Bulge returns for a dignified burial The flag draped coffin lay on a Hoboken pier for over a month It was claimed by an Army detail from the New York Port of Embarkation The Greek Orthodox Church directors said the body will receive a dignified burial in Linwood Cemetery upon arrival today

Two Men Enlist In U S Army Here

Two young men enlisted today at the Mt. Vernon Army recruiting office announced by M/Sgt. Lou Beasley. Otto C. Cox, 17, of 725 S. 15th street, joined the para troops Regular Army for three years and will report to Fort Riley Kansas for basic training. John Robert Morton, 18, of Salem, enlisted in the Air Force for four years and will report to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training.

Martha Kennedy Rites Planned After Her Death at 84

Martha Kennedy of RFD 7 Mt. Vernon died at 12 45 pm at the Nashville Illinois home of her daughter Mary Maddox. She was 84 years 11 months 16 days. Funeral services 3 00 pm Saturday at Myers Chapel with Rev Cyrus Maulding officiating, burial Oakwood cemetery. She was born April 27 1865 in Hamilton County Illinois, daughter of William Collins and his wife. She first married Will Brumley who died in 1894, later married Joe Kennedy who survives. Surviving: four sons Ed Brumley Palestine Illinois Loren Kennedy Indianapolis Indiana Percy and Russell Kennedy Mt. Vernon. four daughters Cora Weaver Spunner Wisconsin Mary Maddox Nashville Illinois Evelyn Forrester Indianapolis Indiana Lola Pigg Mt. Vernon. one son Bryan Kennedy deceased February 2 1950. Funeral home will receive callers prior to service.

Minnie Shurtz 78 of Waltonville died at 7 p m Thursday at the home of her daughter Georgia Keef 325 S 18th St. She had been ill a few days and funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p m at Waltonville Methodist Church with Rev G A Phelps of Chester. Burial in Knob Prairie cemetery. She was born April 16 1872 in Jefferson County daughter of EN and Sarah Fairchild and married to William R Shurtz who died 16 years ago. Survived by daughter Georgia Keef two sisters two half sisters four grandchildren six great grandchildren and she reared two grandsons Fred and Glenn Shurtz. Preceded in death by son Ray five sisters and three brothers.
