J Carroll Hall, 81, of Route 6, died at 10 29 a m today at Good Samaritan Hospital. A retired farmer, he leaves funeral arrangements to Myers Funeral Service and is survived by family members not listed in the notice.
Joseph E. Wood 97 of Woodlawn died at Hickory Grove Manor Nursing Home at 5 30 am. He was born August 7 1875 in Woodlawn, son of James and Laura Wood. A retired L N Railroad employee and Methodist, he married Nannie Scarbaugh in 1925. she died in 1946. Funeral Friday 10 30 am at Myers Chapel with Rev. C W Coats. burial Woodlawn cemetery. He leaves two half sisters in St Louis and several cousins.

W. B. Reason Dale W. B. Reason Dale W. B. Red Reason, 61, of Dale, died at 6 a.m. yesterday at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. Funeral at 1 p.m. Thursday at Gholson Funeral Chapel in McLeansboro with Dwight Butler officiating. Burial in Bigby Hill. Born March 5, 1912, at Cisco, son of Samuel and Ruth Reason. Married Feb. 29, 1936, to Mabel Johnson. Survived by wife Mabel, a son Gale of Waukegan, a brother Perley of Monticello, and a sister Gladys Brighton of Monticello.

Chicago quotes wheat 2.32 no 2 soft red, corn 1.64 no 2 yellow, oats 0.97. National Stockyards receipts: hogs 4,000 to 5,500 head, cattle 600, sheep sparse. Slaughter steers 45.50 to 46.50, heifers 43.00 to 44.50, cows 30.50 to 36.00, bulls 39.00 to 41.00. Not enough sheep tested.
New York stocks opened up with the Dow Jones average climbing to 960.49 and a 12.94 point gain. Trading volume reached 16.77 million shares, the highest in about two weeks, while 84 advancers edged 73 decliners on the NYSE. Investors cited strong first quarter earnings from large firms and rising hopes that the Nixon Administration would take inflation action.
The Dow Jones industrial average stood at 959.74, down 0.75, with 30 stocks. transports at 199.24 fell 1.20, utilities rose to 108.70 by 0.38, and the broader 65-stock index at 302.73 declined 0.41.

Gov. Daniel Walker dropped James C. Krejci from consideration for chief deputy of the Illinois Savings and Loan Commission amid reports of two Circuit Court judgments totaling 36013 dollars for unpaid debts. Krejci, a real estate investment broker, faced accusations in a separate case with Sen. Donald Swinarski overcharges to a Chicago bank and a later settlement offer. The action follows the Tribune report on the judgments and pending actions.
Despite severe weather, area drivers had few crashes. Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies logged one incident at Rend Lake College West Parking Lot at 4:15 p.m. a collision between Danny A. Donoho aged 20 of Bluford and Ellen M. Sawyer aged 26 of Ewing caused major damage to both cars. No injuries reported in 16-county district.
Attorney Bill Howard reported the town fund increase stems from three main elements: election expenses this year, payments into the IMRF beyond the levied amount, and inflation costs. The local taxes levy exceeds disbursements by 3119.64 with outstanding tax anticipation warrants totaling 10000 in the town fund.
The Farrington Township Cancer Crusade Benefit raised 350 dollars for the American Cancer Society. Mt. Vernon VFW Post 1376 will host a public dance on April 21 with all proceeds to the American Cancer Society Fund. The Branded Men orchestra will perform as attendees donate one dollar, with under 21 accompanied by parents. Tickets available at the VFW Club, Chamber of Commerce office, Ramada Inn, or from VFW and Auxiliary members.
Four-year-old Renee Hall was found stabbed to death in her grandparents home in Peoria Illinois. Police report the child died of multiple stab wounds after the mother, Donna White, called police and then attempted suicide with wrist slashes. White transported to St Francis Hospital for treatment as officers investigate no charges yet filed.
Don Lee, longtime educator and farmer ally in Mt Vernon and Jefferson County, died recently. He served as president of Illinois farm advisers, earned the Illini University Man Of The Year honor, and led a strong 4 H program. He organized the Jefferson County Homemakers Extension Association and retired as senior adviser agriculture in 1969. He helped found the Lions Club chicken barbecue, aided senior citizens, and served on multiple local boards including the Chamber of Commerce United Fund and Security Bank.
